Hello,

A new mod for Half-Life 2 is currently underway called Rival City. While the mod is early in its development, the goal, focus, direction, and drive is very much present and alive in the members already on the team. At this point, we are presently recruiting members so that we can form a production schedule to get the proverbial ball rolling.

Already written is a 30 page outline of exactly what the game is shooting for. This is an excerpt that gives a synopsis of what we’re shooting for.

Goal of the Project

The goal of the Rival City project is to create a persistent ongoing world about an active city and its street racing and street fighting circuits. Players will create personas for themselves that will have a role in the circuits. Player formed street teams will fight and race for money, bragging rights, and the control of sections of Rival City. In addition to creating a living and dynamic community, we also intend on creating unique and fun gameplay that will bring players back for more.

Rival City

Rival City’s actual name is San Rivera, the city of hopes and dreams. San Rivera came into its own in the 1940’s, marking its claim as one of the more prominent port cities in California. Built close to the Pacific Ocean, the architecture of the city has an exotic feel, especially along the upscale suburban section called Rivera Heights. San Rivera’s business district in the heart of the city is where one can most of the underground and illegal gambling activity, although there have been rumors of the reported races and fights taking place in San Rivera’s Downtown area, Chinatown, and the low-end South Rivera. Only the most daring of racers have held races on the visually stunning Rivera Skyway, the suspended highway system above the rural and laidback Chase Hollow.

Rival City Street Circuit

The Rival City Street Circuit started in the spring of 2005 when some of the most known street racers and fighters wanted to create an organized league to attract the best competitors in the city and beyond. While waged matches take place all over Rival City, the Street Circuit has begun its strongest attempt at organization in the Business District. Nightclubs, parking lots, basketball courts, and other places are used as stages for fighting venues where thousands of dollars are up for grabs. As competitive as things have gotten in the Rival City Street Circuit, there are two rules all competitors live by: No guns, and stay true to your word.

Some of the features we are looking to implement are:
-Persistent Map System (A large city section that allows players to race or fight in several venues on the same map)
-Online Ladder System
-City Sections being ‘ran’ by player-made street teams by leading in Ladder stats
-Player-made Street Teams(clans) competing in both the street fighting and racing circuits with connections to both through money and players’ characters.
-Character Creation and Stats Upgrading
-Complete Car Customization
-Completely New Fighting System Designed for the Keyboard and Mouse
-Multiple Fighting Styles with Customizable Move Lists and Special Moves

All of these features are explained in full detail in the complete Rival City Outline, and I’ll gladly show anyone who’s seriously interested in the mod the full outline. To apply, or to become part of the community, head over to our forums at:

Ahem... Sounds ALOT like Criminal Velocity ( established 1/22/04 ). However, we dont focus on melee so much... the racing, car customization, money, player determined gangs. PM me for more info, we must discuss this clone situation.

Um, I don't see a clone situation. Unless you can show me where you've patented the idea of customizing a car in a game, then I'm not sure we have a conversation to discuss. I can almost guarantee you Rival City will be significantly different from Criminal Velocity.

Good luck on your Mod, however.

EDIT:

After reviewing your ModDB profile: (https://www.moddb.com/mods/criminal-velocity)

Your mod is nothing like ours outside of a half-similar general theme that you have completely no ownership over. One of the more interesting quotes from your profile is this:

Cars: Street racing is one of the aspects of my idea. The mod is meant to be somewhat of a GTA style… just without the grand theft auto.

Explain to me how you're trying to tell me that we're stealing your idea again?

And after a rundown of the features your profile has discussed, there are significant differences in our mods' goals. The only crime happening in Rival City as a mod are the street racing and the street fighting, both of which are illegal. While you weren't exactly forthcoming in what you have planned for crime, it seems to be in a totally different direction than what Rival City has planned.

Other differences include:

Criminal Velocity has guns and Rival City does not.
Rival City is about street teams competing for money where Criminal Velocity is about gangs committing crimes, racing, and shooting.
Money in Criminal Velocity is spent on "drugs (to sell), bombs, lock picks, tools for hotwiring a car" whereas Rival City's money system will be spent on upgrading players' cars, their clothing, and their character's skill.

I think that's proof enough.

Any of the features that you have planned like saving character data and character customization are hopeful additions for your mod. They're required for ours.

Bottom Line: Criminal Velocity in absolutely no way inspired the creation of Rival City, and outside of racing in an urban environment (only half of what Rival City is about, mind you), they have nothing in common.

1. I never said you stole our idea... never once did I suggest you deliberately cloned ours.

2. Do not give me a hostile tone ( "general theme that you have completely no ownership over" ) I've been on 28 projects, I'm not a fool by any means.

3. Saving character data and customization IS required in our mod. And the list of item purchase is a rough idea, not the current list in the design doc.

Bottom Line: A clone means someone is creating a mod with a relatively similar idea, with no intention to steal or any suggestion of prior knoledge to the earlier-established mod. However, as long as you are focusing on street fighting, in the sense of melee combat, I have no quarrel.

Hint: you should really keep these types of posts in PM... it's bad PR, especially when making direct attacks.

1. Fair enough, but I feel it was implied. I apologize for jumping the gun in that regard.

2. Talking to me like "we must discuss this clone situation" is plenty hostile to me.

3. That's not what your website and modDB profile say.

"I also hope to add a saving system so the player can keep the things he completed in the game…" -From your modDB profile.

"Hopefully we will be able to implement a system of character customization, so you can tell each other apart." -From your modDB profile.

"We hope to put in a system of street racing" -From your website.

Bottom Line: I've proven that Criminal Velocity and Rival City aren't similar ideas. If you have no quarrel, then why bring it up in the first place? In your initial post you even acknowledged the street fighting aspect of our mod.

Hint: When someone publically makes a claim about something, the general public has a right to know how things were resolved so as the initial claims aren't taken as truth. If you had sent me a private message initially, you would have gotten a private message in response. I haven't made any direct attacks, and I'm sorry if you feel you have been attacked. I was giving my defense to claims made about my mod which were not true.

2. Actually, I'm just saying there is business to attend to

3. That was all written PRE-HL2 Release (any possiblilities were purely speculatory)

Bottom Line: Now that you have more acurrately defined where your focus lies, which is the information I qished to know, I can agree with you.

Hint: You resolve it in PM's (so the content of the agurements remain confidential), then merely post something to the effect that- "Problems resolved, no clone situation exists"

*** Good Luck on your mod m8

2. I can see that, but I also see a hostile and commanding tone behind it that I didn't appreciate. Just as you're entitled to feel offended by my response, I'm entitled to the same.

3. I suggest updating the information you convey to the public, then.

I've only reasserted the ideas presented in the original post after comparing the information you have available.

Again, good luck on your mod.

Guys, it's clear that noone has stolen anyone's idea here. So what if the ideas are similar? Leave it at that.

Yes, ideas are a dime a dozen. Finished nods are all that matter.

ya we didnt steal any ideas, it was actually two seperate mods, i had started a street racing and he had started a street fighting, we were helping with each others ideas and decided it best to combine them together, i have never seen or heard of your mod (no offense by that at all) so we did not steal any ideas or intend to clone your mod. i wish you good luck with it in fact.

And on another note we are still lookin for staff

I think the whole 28 project thing might be your problem. One or two failed projects wil probably give you some valuable experience, 27 failed projects means you're doing something drastically wrong. And even if 5 or 7 were successfull, then that still leaves about 22 or 20 failed projects..

Also: you started the offensive tone. You just shouted he was "copying" your ideas and told him that he HAD to contact you. Afterwards you address him on HIS tone? Give me a break..
