Are there any communities specifically for reviving and enjoying old dead mods? Hosting servers and encouraging people, setting up community events to enjoy the nearly forgotten hard work? I figured this was the best place to ask, but it looks more focused towards the creators.

There are too many awesome, unique mods out there with no one to play them, or no servers up. Some of my favorite gaming experiences have been setting up local servers and 1v1ing my friend on weird old HL1 and HL2 mods, like Train Hunter or Earth's Special Forces or Zombie Master. These are some of my favorite games of all time, and unfortunately its near impossible to enjoy them as they are meant to be played nowadays.

The same goes for old ass multiplayer games that don't have a community anymore, either. Things like Majesty or other LAN games.

Please let me know if you guys know any communities that celebrate the heritage of modding, and in appreciating the thousands of hours people labored over unique experiences that not enough people got to enjoy.

Or if you guys are interested in such a thing. I think a place to share and kickstart communities again would be fantastic.

We are here to host those mod files so they never get lost. Setting up servers to play them however is another beast altogether. There are so many i'd like to play myself!

Good to know there's some interest. Yeah I've got some resources available and was going to start putting up some dedicated servers. I was thinking a good way to generate interest would be through Twitch streaming, and maybe setting up some forums as a central location of discussion for other mods/games to try/host, as well as guides for installing/playing, since the old technology is often pretty obtuse to set up.

It would be some work but I think the time might be right for something like this. I have a feeling there are thousands of gamers who would be interested in playing games that can no longer be played like they were meant to be, and there's enough technology to leverage to get exposure and generate interest, but it would be a matter of being able to build that community though (unless there is one somewhere already!) Either way, I'll be sure to give an update here if I continue to develop the idea.

In the meantime, I'm working on configuring a dedicated server to my favorite game of all time, Zombie Master. Still gets a handful of people on some evenings!

Half Life1 mods for the non-Steam version will be hard to get players. Valve's Steam version isn't compatible with the original game.

Now, if you're wanting old Quake mods & servers, those are pretty alive. :) For Q2 there's www.tastyspleen.net and q2 cafe (http://leray.proboards.com/ ). Here's several Q1, 3 & Doom communities out there too.

This sounds like a worthy commitment, please tell me (PM) if you start reviving some old mods. I really miss some of them!

Half Life 1 mp mods that require servers are a pain to get players for. Maybe create a group to organize matches, game setup etc. I wouldn't mind joining in, plenty of good mods for the game.
