Hey there.

About 9 month ago I started a newbie project, to learn more about game programming. Today this project has grown quite a bit, and I've learned a lot. I recently posted my 10th video. There has been quite a bit of progress since my first video. Back in October I posted a video of this game in the general banter, but there has been improvements since then, and I really want to show it off, and get some feedback on it.

About the game (If you're not the reading type, skip ahead to the video)
Events
The game is heavily inspired by Terraria, which was the intention from the beginning. Terraria did a great job on their game, and I especially liked the part were events could occur, like Blood moon (zombie invasion), the Goblin invasion, meteors and such. What I am trying to do with my game is to utilize these events a lot more, to create a dynamic and varied game experience. These events could be something very mundane like the weather or seasons changing.
One of my ideas is the winter season, which will make it hard to gather food (hunger and thirst are a part of the game) so you need to stockpile food in the
warmer seasons. Some monsters or animals will only spawn during certain seasons. Another type of event is a constellation based event (Not yet in the
game). A certain constellation might appear one night, and cause a rare flower to grow in a certain part of the world or maybe the constellation causes a
specific animal to behave differently. There will also be events that the player can influence much more directly, like fulfilling certain criteria for a boss to spawn.

Boss Mechanics
Terraria has some nice boss mechanics, but I am trying to go in a different direction. Recently I've been working on a tool that allows me to create custom
worlds, which will be used as "instances" that you can access by creating portals to them. Here you will be able to battle bosses that are
unique to these instances. There will of course, be requirements that needs to be fulfilled in order to summon these portals. By creating these
instances it gives me the opportunity to utilize the environment much more, since the player hasn't been able to change the environment. I am still
planning to have bosses in the ordinary world, so that the player will still be able to build strategically to combat the bosses.

The Video
The video below is the 10th video in the series. If you find it interesting, I encourage you to check out some of my other videos as well, and please leave some feedback if you have any.

I will take my leave, and continue my work on the next mob- A winter only mob :)

Thanks for your time - Enjoy the video :)

It's pretty cool mate, but why do you made exactly same hp icons, action bar and stuffs? It's not inspired by terraria, you just remade the whole game. I think you should start thinking about some real new features like pet system, defend style game with incoming hordes, flying vehicles or something.

Thanks for your feedback :)

First off, I am aware that the HP icons are more or less the same as Terraria, and I actually have another way of showing the health. Instead of the "bars" I prefer, "indicators" like the ones showing thirst and hunger, the reason it isn't there yet is that for health it is very important that the indicator is easy to understand, and I don't want to use the "glass ball with red liquid" in it. I haven't considered it that important so It's been on the the to do list for.. 3-4 months I think :)
The action bar concept is something I am quite fond of, and after all it's not like Terraria invented it :)
If you are refering to the design, then yes, I've placed the quickbar there, instead of my initial idea at the center bottom. I prefer to keep as much as the GUI in one place, as long as there's room for it.
The color theme for the inventory and quickbar system is actually made so that the player can choose exactly what color he desires, I am just using the ones I prefer :)

You mentied a pet system- And I actually have a very rough pet system thought out- The pets in this case, are faeries, or small angels/demons, that can follow you. They then have a few abilities, based on their type (and maybe level). You get these in various ways, as loot, or rescued from certain bosses, or in some cases can be caught with a net (similar to the onces you catch bugs with). But all this is something I consider extra flavor, so nothing concrete has been decided yet.

I am very well aware that a lot of the way, my game is very similar to Terraria, but there are (and will be) differences, enough so that the games will be different from each other. I am already going a different path with the selection of mobs I use and their mechanics.

I take your feedback and advice to heart :) - And after reading your comment I will consider trying to distance myself even more.. Maybe I should look over my notes for the pet system and get it done a little earlier. The sooner I distance the game from Terraria, the better I suppose.

With that being said- The game was intended to be in the Terraria genre, and that will not change :)

Thanks for your reply :)

Just some ideas what i missed from terraria
- Stairs or ramps, so don't have to jump-jump-jump
- Ladder
- Scaffolding
- Industrial stuffs like miner machines, pumps, generators
- Defend structures like barbed wire, spike traps, bear traps
- Some kind of magic liquid to extract and use it as fuel for jetpack or weapons

Hey again :)

Thanks for the ideas, I really like the one with "defend structures".
Some of the others are also quite good.

Thanks a lot for the input :)
