Heya..

I'd love to know what some of you guys think about modding old games, like Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen, Quake or (even) Prince of Persia. I saw some dudes talking that modding old games is just plain silly, but they didn't have any good points (all they were saying was just "omg why do you mod a 10 years old game"). My point is that modding old games is a great thing; and I must say that I agree with those people (Hi T-Ronx! :)) who say that such a modding is a great "school" and training before starting something for a fresh game. It's a lot easier to mod Wolfenstein than Half-Life 2.

Now, why do I think modding old games is great.. First, the idea of modding is keeping up the flame of games, right? This is very correct in this situation. Second, all of the Half-Life mods (I'm getting sick of it) are more and more unoriginal - see operativex post about it, it's all there. And third - it's a lot more fun than modding the new games, because you can take everything slow (smaller amount of work), you don't have to bother with advanced 3d super-kickass-models (just draw some sprites.. yay, drawing sprites is great!), and there isn't such a competition as it is between (for example) Half-Life mods. The last one - Wolfenstein's community is a lot smaller, which means it's probably a lot more friendly and helpful. The Wolfenstein forums is really a place which you can call your "net home", because you know all the people around.. And with HL, it's hard, because everytime you visit the forums, everything changes. Chaos.

I don't say some of HL mods aren't cool.. HL's SDK is a great tool, and some of releases are really awesome.. but somewhere in that crazy pursuit after new features, graphics and models it has lost some of the modding magic.

That's all.. Now, what's your opinion about modding old games, and is it funnier or more boring than playing HL mods? I'd love to see what you write.

EDIT: I think I posted in a wrong forum section.. oops.. mods move this if you wish :)

Martin

Yeah, should probably be in the discussion forum, ah well.

Modding old games is a great learning experience for beginners as well as older gamers. With the full release of the Quake 1 source, people can effectively bring an old title into something completely new, as is happening with a few projects at this present moment. Quake 1 is also shareware, so people don't need to buy it to play the mods! :)
I love modding old games.

Actually, you can only play mods with the registered version, but you can get it for about 5 quid so it'd be silly not to buy it ;)
