Current Status US Central - Dual P4 Xeon 2Ghz / 1GB RAM US East - P4 2.4Ghz / 512MB RAM AUS East - P4 2.0Ghz / 1GB RAM All sponsored by oktagone. the idea being with moddb 2.0, it will load up all images/content from the mirror closest to you. Will take a bit of codin, but should load-balance the site out a bit. basically, all .com's will goto the primary server... all else to US west.. and .au's to AU East. so if you goto www.moddb.com,, all SQL data will load from the central server, yet it will be pulled to you, from the closest moddb cluster near you! Gotta get some more details down - will expand this post shortly. - Edited By Greg On Sun 25th, May 2003 @ 6:38:28pm -- Greg |

thats a pretty friggen cool idea... but that would take an INSANE amount of coding... i think it wouldnt be far out of line to have a european server also, since im guessing that the site gets a fair amount of traffic from that region -- ___________________________

yes, i am considering a paid members server. Like $5 per month you get unlimited access to a premium no-wait fileserver. Obviously, the more people we get paying, the cheaper we could offer it.. and even include the possibilty of a public file server. -- Greg |

Awesome idea, but why would they pay to use our server and not say fileplanets which offers 400000 times the files? -- Scott Reismanis |

I am not sure on the costs of fileplanet subscriptions and what not, but moddb's fileserver would be aimed at (where possible) at around half the price. What i aim to do, is try and get some kind of special so that people who have the paid subscriptions get access to files on the server exclusively. For example, say HL Rally releases, we would obtain 24 hour access rights to host the download on our member's only FTP before it became available onto the primary mirror (or.. alternate mirrors like Fileplanet) i dont know what we can call it... modDB Exclusive Downloads or something. We can also have a "request" section for members, say you are after a file/mod you cant find ANYWHERE we will track it down and throw it up on the mirror. I think we can work out some other stuff the paid ppl get too.. like i dont know, access to special parts of moddb ? Like, live (web-based) irc chats with game developers from upcoming and existing games (not hard for me to organise) Serverspy integration functionality (I.e. you can search for players on gameservers from the moddb website). You name it! -- Greg |

(just a side note: the money raised would also be totaled somewhere publically on the site, with possibly a network news page with detailed information on where the $$ is being spent, so that people know we arent raping their wallets to buy ourselves personal stuff ) -- Greg |

Well that could definatly work, has to be tackled very carefully, cos i hate webpages that restrict reviews and things 'ala gamespot / IGN' -- Scott Reismanis |
