Mod Database Optimisation Thread

Ok, I have noticed a few 'Critical Errors' on the modDB lately because the server cannot handle so many people at once... It is prolly be cos greg has not 'upped' the limit yet, however I plan on optimising this site...

There are alot of queries run which a). are not really needed or b). just can be optimised and merged into one...

I reckon I could easily squeeze 20~40% better performance by optimising but doing so will take much time and effort.. Plus with mySQL 4.0 installed there are some really nifty features that will simplify and speed up my code a great deal which i am not yet utilising. So yeah i will do one page at a time

I guess thats it.. you won't really notice any such changes, but anyhow if there are any features you would like to see coded in, and reckon are really needed, please post em here

*modDB Dictionary
*each month the moddb system picks 5 mods that are not complete and 5 that are. The people who register are able to vote the mod of the month and the mod to watch for the month
--only one vote per person
--once a mod is selected they cant be in for another 6 months
*site spell check
*insite chatroom for those who dont use mirc
*page to show who is playing on the moddb server or promote it

Yeah, maybe you could set up the IRC channel to have an insite window for those who don't download mIRC. It might end up getting more conversation that way, also.

Code in a button I can push that will give me another dot and throw a pie at azz0r.

You know the bugs system which nobody uses? Turn it into a suggestions system and allow comments on each one. Every suggestion then has instant status available (maybe 4: Not Checked (default, an admin hasn't looked at it yet), Ignored (not worth it), In Progress (read the tin) and Implemented (all done).)

If we make a fileserver thing, you could charge for a no que, adverts and monthly modification highlights.

See if you make a file.moddb.com which has adverts on, plus ques, then people pay for an account (the cheaper the better, more audience then). then monthly all moderators compile the latest modification gossip, we send out a weekly pm to modification leaders telling them that well pimp them silly etc.

Basically turn into fileplanet, but no adverts on modDB itself.

Look at it this way; youve got 10'000 members already, thats a big audience to draw cash out of.

indeed, I was considering putting forward something similar like 'modDB Premium Account' - you pay and you get a nice badge for your profile, modDB email (perhaps?), a priority slot on any modDB game servers, quejumping if we get a fileserver, your monthly mod highlights, and something else kewl (not sure what, maybe access to a premium only area containing pre-release mods and shit?)

Yep, Id support modDB with my dying pennies.

I know you guys would, but the majority don't. I occasionally visit the site gfxartist.com

They have 8000 dedicatated members of which less than 70 pay and that is after constant pledges and even a day of 'downtime' in protest.

Besides, mods are free and I don't think they would like or 'respect' this site if it appeared I was making money through offering them to 'premium clients'

Secondly, all that you mentioned would take much effort. It isn't easy writting up a monthly gossip column, chaising down beta mod releases. It would most likely fall on me to write such features and sad as it maybe I don't have the time... My area is coding and joining in the community.

Finally, I shall be paying out of my own pocket soon, and I am fine with that. I would like to have thought that I have referered oktagone an adequate amount of clients regardless anyhow
