Hi my name is Mikael Segedi and I'm a game design and project management graduate living in Sweden. I'm would really like to learn to use the unreal engine, and therefore searching for a project were I could get tasks to work on. I don't need a teacher, I will be responsible for completing my own tasks. You can read more about me on my homepage.

I miss the days when the ModDB community was warm, welcoming and eager to help others.

Sigudd: If you're mostly looking to learn the Unreal engine, I'd recommend starting off on your own. Grab UDK and check out their extensive documentation, forums and open-source projects:

Once you have amassed a bit of experience with the tools, you might have better luck finding a team.

On the other hand, if you're looking to expand your game design and PM skills, the engine shouldn't really be a factor (you can put your current talents to good use while learning UDK in your spare time).

If that interests you, feel free to drop me a line. We could definitely use an extra hand.

Okay, just a bit of advice.

You need to have screens of what you've done available on your portfolio if you're looking for work - you've got a good list of projects you've worked on, but I don't know what they looked like, how they played, because I can't see that for myself. Basically, you're just showing a slightly longer version of your CV where you should be showcasing your work.

Good luck either way!

On second thought - I guess I didn't correctly glean the OP's intent .

There have been alot of self proclaimed "game designers" wandering around the interwebs lately, looking for bands of merry followers to make their ideas for them and I assumed this guy was one such. Pet peeve.

If you're looking to get on board with established projects you will still need to have some applicable development skill. Everyone and their grandmother can come up with game design ideas or offer advice about how to make a game better , but when the rubber hits the road everyone on a team (especially the small ones you'll find around here) needs to be an active content developer as well.

I agree with you completely Alex, but what you're describing is the infamous "idea person", whereas Mikael is a trained game designer, and there's a lot more to his role than simply coming up with ideas. Since he can't post links yet, here's his site and resume for those who missed it: Mikaelsegedi.se

While it may seem trivial for a small team to hire someone whose sole purpose is designing and documenting game elements, there are quite a few high-quality mods I could list that, in my personal opinion, would have greatly benefited from such a person.

Either way, he's made it clear that he's not just interested in being a designer, but is also willing to learn some (other) aspects of game development (on UE). I bet it wouldn't take him too long to figure out the editor and, at the very least, he should be able to help prototype some of those ideas.

P.S. My intention wasn't to steer this thread off-topic, I just want to make sure that his request isn't tossed out for the wrong reasons.

I think a big stumbling block is that nobody thinks they need a games designer who'll also do odd jobs on the side, even if they would benefit from it. Mikael, I suspect you may have to be both proactive and subtle - proactive in that you're going to have search for active projects that you like the look of, and ask them if you can playtest while you see what odd tasks you can take on for them. The subtle bit is getting to know the team and earning a bit of trust and respect before you throw any big ideas around - it takes a lot of diplomacy to be able to join a bunch of strangers and then tell them their pride and joy is flawed ;)

I understand your bias. There are many who call themselves game designers. But I'm a real game designer. I have training and knowledge in the field that can assure the quality of a game. By working towards a target group, I can ensure that our games will be played out of a broad group of selected players. That's why we create our games, right?
Some of my tools are:
- Behavioral Psychology.
- Various creative tools.
- Focus testing.
- Documentation and presentation techniques.
In addition, I'v worked in a variety of game projects. I know what it's like to run and work in a team.
I have a passion for this and an education. I always deliver what is required of me and takes game design seriously.

You can find my resume and portfolio on my website. By clicking on the games' name in my portfolio, you can download the game. mikaelsegedi.se

I agree with you Gibberstein.
