Can anybody inform me on how to make a standalone game? Thanks, cuz I have no idea where to start. Nothing in the tutorials. -- "Remember...the enemy has only images and illusions, behind which he hides his true motives. Destroy the image and you will break the enemy." - Enter the Dragon |

Standalone game is kind of like a mod already, but on an open source engine. Open source means they can fiddle around with the engine to improve it or make it to the specifications of the game. This means you just release all of your game when its done and it needs no other game to run it on. So whatever you provide is what the public needs. Anyone else wanna add to that? So is it decently easy to turn like say...a Half-Life 2 mod into Standalone? -- "Remember...the enemy has only images and illusions, behind which he hides his true motives. Destroy the image and you will break the enemy." - Enter the Dragon |

Half life 2 isn't an open source engine, it is licenced by valve and should be for something like 10yrs or something. lol Games that have turned into open source are to my knowledge, Quake 1, Quake 2, doom, doom2 and homeworld, i think. Quake 3 was supposed to last year december, but it got delayed. Edited by: Michael |

Ah I see...2 things. 1) Which would you recommend? 2) People who can make models and maps for mods can also put the models etc. into Standalone games right? -- "Remember...the enemy has only images and illusions, behind which he hides his true motives. Almost always, as long as the game uses a format their used too. A Standalone game can also be a game engine you or someone else writes, doesnt have to be open source... |

1) I personally recommend Quake 1 you don't seem to be very design wise, I wouldn't recommend you jump straight into a standalone game. If you haven't had any experience of games design at all, i'd have to say find a mod that could build your experience, It tooks me 2½ yrs of failing mods for me to realise what I needed to create a successful game. Wow...SF has great graphics...know where I can get Quake 1? -- "Remember...the enemy has only images and illusions, behind which he hides his true motives. Destroy the image and you will break the enemy." - Enter the Dragon |

Those SF graphics are from the Quake 3 version, they're still working with the Quake engine to get the cel-shading. Do a google search for Quake Source, and you should get something. @DavidCult: You can't, even illegally. The HL2 exe has some stuff hardcoded into Steam, I've tried loading it without Steam running before. |

If you want to make a stand-alone game off a closed-source engine, you'll have to buy a license. As for open-source engines like Quake1 and Quake2 - all the power to you. And no, you can't get Quake1 for free, though you can use Open Quartz, and Seasons Forever is going to be standalone so you don't need either really anyway -- < insert subject games here >

Quake1 source is free (GPL), but Quake1 itself, with all content, is not free and you must buy it. -- < insert subject games here >
