I've been developing a game but I have a problem... I spend 15+ hours a week coding a game on top of a 42.5 hour per week full time job in a childcare centre. I can't give up too much more on my free time coding as I'm not making any money out of it. I want to make money being a game developer but I don't want to sell my games. I've currently got a forum and fanbase which I love as they really like my game and the fact I give it out for free and have weekly betas.Someone (one of my moderators) told me to stop releasing betas and just charge people for the game otherwise I'll never make any money out of it. I'm just so against charging even a dollar for my game though. I do however release a beta each week which gets almost 100 downloads so would it be possible to get paid for downloads through advertising or something? Is there a website that makes users watch an ad before they can download a file? I've seen many websites that force people to pay for a product (known as an offer) before getting the game "free" but that defeats the purpose. I'd be happy with like $1 per 100 downloads where people just watch an ad or something. Is something like that possible?

Well there are many ways, regarding websites, AFAIK, ad providers seek large/huge sites (such as networks, portals) not small ones. You would have to ask the target ad provider what he exactly looks for (and about the required number of visitors, downloads etc). So yes that's generally possible for medium-sized sites so you can try it if you find a right ad provider.

The second way are installer ads - you can put 3rd party plugin/software ads in your setup file. They can leave bad impression on those who would like to install your game however, but should bring you some income too.

The third way are in-game ads, that's a good way to make money from free games but only thru mobile/tablet games as no PC games really use that (some games like Total War just put their own series/company ads in their game but not 3rd party adverts).
