As my title says I'm looking to get involved with game development!

I'm not sure this is the place to post about this, so please point me in the right direction if it isn't.

I'm currently a 3rd (final) year Maths student from the UK, and with ~8 months left of university starting a career/getting a job is fast approaching. I, to be honest, still don't really know what I want to do, but I do know I want to do something creative and something that changes with time, and with an interest in games etc I feel that it might be something I enjoy. Unfortunately I have no experience or knowledge, hence why I am here to ask for help, and maybe in the next 8 months I can do something about that! I start a programming for beginners course after christmas, which focus' mainly on Java, maybe that will be a good start?

What I wanted to know is where is a good place to start?

Hello Samozamo,
Game development is not strictly limited to codes and art stuff. Sometimes, developers need volunteers to help them to promote, moderate our assist them. People often get involved in a project because they have communication skills, because they are creative and so on...
Anyway. Basically, if you really want to work as a volunteer, you need to:

  • Find a project that interests you, in which you want to add your contribution.
  • Contact the developer (with the contact button), and explain why you want to help them.

Hope this was hopeful. Feel free to ask other questions.

Hello!
Erayser is right. Game dev is not just "code" and "art". One of the best things you can do is play around with everything and find out what sticks with you. If you're looking to jump into games right out of school, you're going to want to start working on small projects and build a portfolio that shows what you can do. See if any local studios will allow you to shadow some of their workers for a day to give you a better idea of any given position. There's a ton of stuff out there on how to get into the game industry, but take all of it with a grain of salt. Hope that helps!

Programming for sure.
I´ve actually seen one job posting before from a major studio looking for a "pure" mathematician - think it was either DICE or Avalanche Studios. So if you can combine your math degree with at least basic low-level coding skills then Im sure you wont have any problem finding a job.
If possible, you could go for a master´s degree in mathematics with a focus on computer programming.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Faisal Aslam and recently I have made my self learn Game Development. I know basics of PHP, C, C++ and C#. I was watching some video where he the author was telling me how to compile code for Source SDK Base 2013. I compiled the code and ran the game but it closed itself before it fully loads. I have recently installed Steam and don't have Half Life and other such games in my library (actually never purchased any game because I am totally new to Steam).

So, I wanted to ask that if purchasing Half Life and its episodes is requirement to create Source Mods. Can anyone please help me?? I would be glad.
