Here's a rant on a graphical feature of games that has remained common place for several years now; lens flares. Or, as some may understand them, those "little circles you see when you look at the suns in games".

Has it occured to any developers that when people stare at the sun, they don't see a lens flare. In fact, they don't see anything. They go blind. Sometimes permentantly. Lens flares only occur when a camera focuses at or around the sun. So in games, where realism is ranted about and emphasised, why is this realism broken with the lens flare? And all those other unrealistic effects which spend hours of coders times to add in, that could be spent developing gameplay further. For games which aim to achieve a cinematic experience, lens flare works, as does blood and water spraying up onto the camera.

Good point, never really thought about that. I suppose its all a matter of features, with the majority of the market interested in graphics over gameplay (Being casual gamers, they want something that looks cool).

heh, serious sam 2, I know has the lense flare effect, looks good, but obviously it isn't realistic atol :/

Nothing.

Instead of making a lens flare, they could make a nice pixel shader effect which would 'emulate' blinding :P

Exactly. Have it like in Cstrike Source where, when you throw a flash bang, an image is burned onto your screen for a while. Turn this down a bit, have spots on the camera, and you got yourself the reaction to staring at the sun for too long.

Either that or make the main character lose brain cells. :)

I totally agree frosty and share the exact same point of view.

I think Valve thought of this when developing source, thats why they created the sun entity, which basically blinds are using when looking directly at it. None of that lens flare crap.

The only time a lens flare should come up in game IMO is when you are holding a weapon with a scope, but that would even not really be a lens flare, but a simple reflection of the sun.

Hmm, I think you actually get a weak lensflare in a scope as well, but not in the same way, it looks different.

Anyway, you become blind if you stare for 'too long'. It's not like I'm blind now huh? When I was little I was stupid enough to stare into the sun several times because people said it was impossible and I wanted to prove that they were wrong. :P

The only thing that happens is that you get several different parts in your eyes that becomes temporarely damaged and you get the 'sun' burnt into your vision for quite some time. You'll notice this effect if you stare into a strong lit lightbulb (60w+) at close range and then turn your head away and close your eyes. To me, I get blue-ish strands/spots when I'm closing my eyes. But, looking into a lightbulb is alot weaker than the sun though. ;)

actually this might be possible in a few years. They are currently working on ultrathin foil monitors, some even including a sort of micro micro micro processor. So amybe in 10 years we will have a hud display in front of our eyes :D
I wonder how much it will cost though.....

Actually, at certain angles of the sun with proper water circulation one can in fact notice a lens flare effect that is see many times, unfortunately, we tend to glance it off as when our eyes move to that position the light glints in such a manner as to be intensely bright where it requires us to blink and thus either disrupt the image, often turning away, or to the point of the light fading the flare image and replacing it with an all too abundant looking light source. You'll rarely if ever note this, but, it does happen quite alot for a person often moving around and staring at the sun.

Regardless, the effect is not constant unless held in position, it is possible to defeat the flare with proper movement of a lens, or with certain overlappings comparable to a tinting, often this is why you will see glass goggles covered in a thin waxy surface, sometimes mylar, sometimes whatever, in order to not only glaze the light but effect the way it bounces off of glass, though this is again an often unnoted area, and even when it would be possible in certain situations such as Halo and Master Chief's Visor, more than likely in order to assure proper visability there has been a coating applied to the surface to redirect light.

But yeah, I hate lens flare...

Lens flares were impressive in 1997, but now it's 8 years later everyone should just implement HDR lighting and get it over with.

"Erm, yeah. This game sucks, lets go play Command & Conquer."

"'Kay."
That actually happened, to.

I wonder where the joystick would be... :P

Well, anyway, I believe lens flare was really used for just that off-in-the-distance look, and not exactly looking straight into the sun. I do like it that, when you move the camera, the sun's rays move with it. It gives it that nice look :)

I hope they do implement HDR lighting in all games soon, though. Me likey some HDR.

well thats not exactly what i meant...
it was more supposed to be that the whle comp is so small it can fit ont your contact lenses, so you wont have to carry it on your back.
