If modDB needs money for the download server.... Thread

...then why doesn't INtense! sell licenses of the modDB forum to websites? That would raise a lot of money for the download server and whatever else modDB needs funding for!

These forums are technically as good as vBulletin and Invision Power Board, and visually look a better, so why not?

I think he wants it to stay as his own property after all of the hard work, which is understandable, because he wants to make it a one-of-a-kind deal that you can't find anywhere else on the Internet.

I'm not saying I wouldn't love to own a forum license that looks like Moddb's, but I respect the stance INtense is currently at on this case.

Plus, I think this subject was already brought up when he was asking for a name for the Moddb engine...

He'd have to support it himself too, or pay someone else too.

Support Time != Cheap or Small (from experiance)

We already have a download server. Everything you are browsing now is on that server. We also are earning more than enough money to cater for the said server that is already in use.

Anyway, for the meantime modDB remains exclusive. I can't believe you would agree to selling out modDB, Blue.

moddb forums will ALLWAYS stay moddb's. They will never ever be seen on any other site, no matter how much money is offered for them.

This is an idea I toyed with a-long time ago, but I decided for numerous reasons why it won't happen. For one, the forums are tied in with the site, so separating them would be alot of work. And these forums are highly optimised for the mod database only. they don't have alot of the gimmiky extras the big name forums have, and i think due to that reason not many people would like them.

Oh and besides, we like to have our own cool custom forums / pages etc

Technically speaking the mod database is running on the d/l server which has the space but not the bandwidth to run downloads. Fortunatly I have various mirror sites lined up so this needn't prove too much of an issue.

As for selling out, well selling out is letting IGN etc.. come in and take over and that won't happen... selling just the forums wouldn't affect the site either as they are just forums... but yeah there are no intentions to do this

Yeah I agree it is hard to figure out how some people mean some things because alot of it has to do with stress on certain words and such and you cannot hear that in a forum.
