I recently emailed Alienware asking if one of their 256 mb video cards would fit in an Alienbot. They emailed me back and said:

the power supply that this type of system has does not provide enough power to handle this high-performance video card and the rest of the components at the same time

How do I know if a video card will work with my power supply or not? I was looking at requirements for some video cards at NewEgg, and all it said it needed was the right processor and memory. Nothing about a power supply.

I know what video card i'm gonna get, but i just want to learn for the future...

Thanks :D

My power supply has 300 watt of pure strength :P Lol. I think that a rig with a medium-performance PCI-E card will not need more than 400watts.

But from what i heard, an x800xt needs a 500watt power supply :o

Yeah my friend shorted out his video card because he had a 600w power supply.

i do know the power supply of the computer im using. i dont feel like posting it so that someone who is obsessed with this kind of stuff starts telling me how unexceptable it is. if its not important and risky, then im just not gonna post it.

*edit* (it must be that special time of the month for declinsion) its not even worth it. i hope he gets what's coming to him.

it IS important, a bad motherboard can take down the rest of your PC's innards with it..

im saying its not important for me to list the power supply i have, since i already know what card im gonna get. all this thread was asking for, was how to tell if a video card will work with your power supply...

well, it depends on your power supply...

it's about quality as much as "watt rating", a decent antec 450 will be better for your PC than a monster 600W by some unknown name or qtec or shit.
