GOOD GOD my comp lives again!! Thread

AARRRGGH!H!!! Yesterday i installed some new sound drivers, thinkin everything was gonna be ok. The installation went a little rough when it tried to reboot, but no biggy.. I restarted manually with the reset button, came into windows, however when i returned i got about 20 serious error messages. This is happened before, so i thought nothin of it. However then programs wouldnt open right, so i used the start menu and reboot. Exited clean, no issues. However, RIGHT when windows was supposed to open with the welcome screen, my comp reboot :/.. I was puzzled, so i tried safe mode. For some reason took about 15 minutes to get in thru safe mode, and RIGHT before windows should have opened, REBOOT! Safe mode with command prompt, REBOOT!! Changed my BIOS all around incase somethin in there, REBOOT!!!

At this point i was freakin out cause my bro has my XP cd, so i couldnt use that, none of my 98 boot disks work, and my 98 CD doesnt boot. Soo, i tried my primary HD's boot disk, but that requires DOS, so now i cant reformat, cant get into windows, and no CD to boot from.... I was helpelss..

Soo, this morning my mom drove me out to my friends house and i picked up his XP disk to try. However, in the setup, my old windows got SOO corrupted, i couldnt even re-install it! To fix this, i got REALLY mad and disconencted my c drive, and set my D as C, so nowim runnin on one hard drive... Workin so far, but seems really laggy, prolly wil go away once i reinstall drivers and so forth. So, just thought i'd share with u all how windows dicked me over! It commited suicide on me, and couldnt even reinstall itself! Also, to blame is my HD... Its a maxtor btw, and i've had nothin but probs with it. My other one tho, a Seagate, has run GREAT! No probs at all! So one more thing to remember, if buyin a hard drive, get a Seagate!

i couldnt format the harddrive tho, thats the thing! It totally died out, couldnt access it at all! no command prompt, cause XP = no dos. No boot disk, cause boot disk needs DOS... was kinda screwed.. lol

ya.. things are still laggy tho, real bad, im hopin its jsut drivers or somethin.. should pass soon enough..

What caused all these reboots?

i think windows jsut got majorly corrupted and crashed each time i tried to start it. Cause the reinstall couldnt even run cause it was so messed up! so, i guess windows went bad on me.. God damnit, now i gotta start over on Torque too..

good news! Its already workin better then before! I just did my video drivers, and they arent bugged like they were before! Before, it said my AGP spped was 0, when it shoulda been 8x.. Now it shows 8X.. Also, when i changed my video settings, took about 8 seconds after i clicked ok to close... now its instant! I think things are gonna work out much better now! And also my comp would do random resets on me, like it did when i was tryin to boot last night, only just for no reason. However this may have been from the HD, cause it spun down each time it did this.. but o well, things are lookin good!

congrats how did you get so much progress already?

i work quickly.. The second i got the cd, i tried installin it, didint work, so i switched drives.. All in all, took me like, 1 1/2 hours to be up and runnin agian.. beats the hell outta my brothers old 4 he used to take doin it..

maybe keep knopix or another bootable cd around so you can format/boot easier

ya, gotta work somethin out.. but things are goin GREAT! somehow my comps runnin about, twice as fast too!! No complaints in the end, save for the 20 hours of work i lost..

Becouse my xp was fucked up I'v tryed to reinstall xp a week ago or something. The computer kept rebooting when I entered setup or when setup was XX% completed. finally I finished setup (after 20 reboots). Windows was loading and ...crash, all the time. So I reinstalled xp again (success after 20 reboots). Windows was loading and everything went fine this time (well, i got an error during installation but instalation kept going). Does anybody know what the problem could be? :/

I have no ideas what went wrong, Id email the sound driver company and tell them of your experience, its likely a bug on there part.

no, because i installed the same drivers, no prob. I think it was inpart to blame on my hard drive, because almost every time my comp crashed, some file gets corrupted on that drive. So, i think it was all that damn HD's fault. And maybe a bit of windows..

ive had one time where the hard drive in a computer i was working on died like that

it wouldnt load windows (this one actually would just sit there at the loading screen forever) and you couldnt do anything else to it. i eventually tried fdisking and formatting. i then got an error telling me there wasnt enough memory to format... when i tried fdisking, it came up and told me that the drive was write protected. i then opened up the case and looked at the hd, and someone had written "bad" in sharpie on the top of the hd. go figure

the platter and spindle are still sitting on my desk (i took apart the hd )

...maybe I should get my computer fixed lol its had a virus since February, won't let me get on the internet so I have to use other peoples computers... its gay but im lazy and I don't feel like calling customer support. oh by the way its MS.Cache Virus if anyone knows anything about it pm me I'd rather someone here tell me how to fix it if thats possible but I have a feeling this is going to require a hex editor... fun stuff :/
