I've been using both for a couple of years now but it looks like every time I check back there is less difference between both of them.

The games lists look almost identical with every bigger mod being on indiedb and moddb being full of standalone games.

Why bother to run 2 different sites when everybody simply uploads everything to both?

They're not exactly different sites. They're kind of one site with two domains and two skins so it's not that people are uploading their stuff to both, but rather that they're having it display on both. I think there's probably only one database (and I think it used to be shared with the Desura database).

Yep it was shared with the Desura database, but that was quite a long time ago.

And just looking at the recent division between Slide DB apps and Indie DB indies (apps are no longer visible on Indie DB), seems like DB sites will sport more and more unique content. (However you can still view apps on both Mod DB and Slide DB as right now Mod DB still serves as the ultimate/core site where you can find everything - a central hub of sorts.)

In the quite distant yet still close enough future a more solid line will be drawn between content of each of the sister sites while their visual design will be going to be streamlined and unified. So they may tend to be gradually more different with each passing year... we will see.
