I want to start by saying, yes I know that the current front page poll topic is similar to what this thread may be about. However as we all know, poll comments aren't the best way to talk about things.

With that out of the way, I want to talk about what people think about/look for when choosing a game engine. So I ask of you for the next game you are going to create/currently working on, which game engine are you gonna work with/working with or are you going to create your own engine? And why you chose to do that.

I do this crazy thing where I create my own custom engine. It's pretty cool, but I think for my next game I'll try something new.

Personally i like to make my own engine for my game because i feel like i have more freedom and control the core systems, and it allows me to experiment with new features like ray-tracing and things like that. although it all takes a hell of alot of time and work compared to using an engine like Unity or Unreal

You also don't have all the extra bloat those engines add, so you can keep your game smaller and more efficient.

I'm creating a game within the Android Framework (also a bit of an experiment) and since I'm a beginner at Game Development I'd like to write my own game engine first to truly understand the basics/ mechanics. I do plan to take a look at Unity or other engines in the future.
