Best 3rd person shooters - any platform? Thread

I think this has been a great year for 3rd person shooters. 1st and 3rd person are my favorite games and I have a pretty decent list of both. There seems to be more controversy over 3rd person shooters though, so I’m curious to know how other gamers view these games – I think they’re all great, but how would you rank these 3rd person shooter titles, based on your own experience with these games? If you want, list why you think your top picks were done right and why the lower ranking titles weren’t quite “there”. Oh, and feel free to add your own titles that I don’t have listed here.

Max Payne - r0x0rz. Good written story and very indepth. Bullet-time parts I don't like and use much...

Rayman 2 - It plays smoothly on my Pentium 100 and it's a very fun game indeed

GTA3 - Bore

GTA Vice City - Bore, but this time pointless

SOCOM - I hope you like playing with and against drunken sailor children.

Splinter Cell (PC) - Pretty well done. I prefer PC version over anything else though. Elbowing is fun.

splinter cell isnt a 3rd person or 1st person shooter, its a piece of crap

resident evil zero isnt a 1st 3rd person shooter either, neither is spider man

Indiana jones isnt 1st or 3rd person either

Jade Dingo, I worry about your game sensibility if you can say Splinter Cell is crap, but that the Thing and ETM are among the best... and I can see how RE Zero, Spider-Man and Indiana Jones aren't technically 3PS, but Splinter Cell most definitely is.
Here's my list in order of preference, ranked by my personal "replay" factor:

Splinter Cell - can't wait to play it over again
Max Payne - can't wait to play it over again
Hitman 2 - can't wait to play it over again
GTA Vice City - probably won't play it over again, but couldn't put it down when I was playing it
GTA3 - never finished, probably never will
Indiana Jones: Emperor’s Tomb - haven't finished, but want to
SOCOM Navy Seals - haven't finished, but want to
Brute Force - haven't finished, but will
Metal Gear Solid 2 - haven't finished, probably never will
The Getaway - haven't finished, but want to
Resident Evil Zero - haven't finished, want to, probably never will
Enter The Matrix - finished, may never play again
Spider-Man - havne't finished, never will
The Thing - haven't finished, never will

Tough to rank, because I really like most of these games, but I base it mainly on replay desire, or overall brilliance of the game in general.

Well, I still don't understand how you could say that, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. I still think Splinter Cell is the most brilliant 3PS ever. Speaking of which, I'm still anxious to see what the PS2 and GC versions of Splinter Cell are like (http://www.splintercell.com/us - have you seen the new extras?) Anyway, I love the stealth/action genre and I think anyone who would say that Splinter Cell isn't fun probably doesn't have the patience for all the sneaking around and the trial-and-error problem solving.

whats QUAKE 1?

A very fun third-person shooter, if you get an actually GOOD chase cam in there. Most engine-based ones aren't that great (player is in the middle of the screen and the camera is always locked behind him). An ideal chase cam has the player more around the bottom of the screen, an easy way to aim your weapons, and with a camera that moves smoothly; if the player makes a sharp turn, the camera rolls around him and slowly goes back into place. MiniRacer is the only Quake mod I can think of that did this...

I don't know about Conflict: Desert Storm, but I reckon those other three are worth getting. For single player, I don't think you can beat Splinter Cell, but it doesn't have a multi-player option. For single or multi-player I would go with SOCOM 2, but I have no idea how long you'll have to wait for that.

Splinter Cell can't be beat with console controllers; stick to PC.

Ninja Gaiden all the way.

oh and ninja gaiden envolves shooting...crossbow shootin...so u can call it a 3d shooter too

conflict dessert storm is only good only xbox, and sequel will only be good on xbox
