At what point do you put a game on Greenlight (Forums : Development Banter : At what point do you put a game on Greenlight) Locked

Just put my game on Greenlight as a kind of early indicator, been an hour and I had a few positive comments and one that basically turned round and said 'good idea, looks crap' also only abut 38% of people voted yes, the rest voted no. I'll let it run for now but I am starting to consider it a waste of 70 quid.

So two questions struck me:

  1. Do I actually want my game paraded around on a glorified popularity contest? Its a sci-fi game and therefore not mainstream, so am I asking for a kicking?
  2. What point do you put a game on there? I wanted an early indicator and raise a bit of awareness, so I stuck it up in a pre-alpha state - but again, am I just asking for a kicking?

Interested to hear your thoughts...

Ah turns out i'd put it in the wrong section but the early concepts bit seems to be full of spam - jeeez, not a wonder they want to shut it down. It's not quite the indie paradise its been sold to me at.... :S

Well, the ultimate point of Greenlight would be getting your game on Steam for sale, which is the lens people are going to judge you with. Since you could very well be selling your game if it gets approved, people are going to be cautious about approval.

I would not use Greenlight for early feedback, IndieDB would be far better place for that. I would only use Greenlight when I was ready to sell something. If your game is well into Alpha or Beta, you could use it for early access, but even early access games are well beyond the pre-alpha state (at least I hope so).

If this is what you are talking about ( Moddb.com ) please continue working on it, I loved Nexus The Jupiter Incident :D

That is what i'm talking about :) you are right of course, shame I discovered that after paying haha! Still it was for charity an all...

Glad you like the game, the fleets are going to be bigger than Nexus and it will likely play nothing like it in the end tho.

I'd make sure I have built up a community around my game before testing your waters on greenlight.

Post the game on Greenlight during it's last phases of development, because the if you put an early build of something they will get extremely nit-picky and overall angry at you. Trust me I made that mistake.

Yeah you're right, that's pretty much exactly what happened!

Although I will say that posting it has a concept has gathered me some keen followers who have a lot of useful things to say!

Yeah that's what I would suggest for an early build.
