Another Doug Interview :)
Pc.gamespy.com

Q. Will the boxed versions of HL2 require any sort of Steam installations?
Doug Lombardi: During installation the user will be prompted to authenticate the copy and create a Steam account. After that is complete, the single-player and LAN games do not require an Internet connection.

Q. When will the tools be released for the mod community?
Doug Lombardi: Now that development on the game is done, a number of engineers are preparing the first version of the Source SDK for release. I don't have an exact date for when this will be available, but it shouldn't be too much longer and will send out word when I have an ETA.

Q. Will we be seeing any new content/maps With CS: Source the only multiplayer component to HL2, are we going to be seeing any new content/maps in the retail version that people have not seen before?
Doug Lombardi: New content for CS: Source is forthcoming, as is Day of Defeat: Source and more. Please stay tuned.

Q. Now that CS has made the move to the Source engine, will community maps still be automatically downloadable in-game as was the case with the original HL/CS?
Doug Lombardi: Yes, and Steam allows us to load the map file in advance of the map change.

Q. Which of the formulas covers the ATI voucher?
Doug Lombardi: Bronze, or apply the value of Bronze to another one of the offers.

Q. What's the latest status on Team Fortress 2?
Doug Lombardi: After we announced TF2 on the HL1 tech, we made the decision to move it to the Source engine. It is still in development and we will be announcing more on that title soon.

Q. In the purchase formulas revealed, a previously announced rent per month through Steam option was missing. What is the status on that, or has that been scrapped?
Doug Lombardi: We'd still like to offer the option of a Steam purchase or a Steam subscription. But, for the near term, we will only be offering purchase options.

Q. Are there any plans for a standalone Half-Life 2 multiplayer part, deathmatch, co-op, somewhere down the line?
Doug Lombardi: Nope.

HL2 was also in development for six years, apparently.

yeah, but tfc pwns all... except for Hammy-bob mod, PVK, Battlegrounds, NS, The Specialists, DoD... lol :P

--

Oct 22 2004 Anchor

And except for Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Doom 3.... basically, it doesn't match with any games that have been made this century :P

Awesome interview, BlueWolf. At least you tried to get some info about the SDK.

Well seeing as though tfc wasnt made this century... :P
and Halo sucks, I hate Valve, and Doom requires uber-pc to run :P

--

Oct 22 2004 Anchor

You can hate VALVe all you want, but Half-Life 1 was a great game and Half-Life 2 will be even better. If you can't see that, then you aren't a PC gamer :P

You don't need an uber pc to run Doom 3, fool. It allows you to run on both low-end and high-end computers, just like Half-Life.

Without Half-Life, you wouldn't have TFC. Same goes for VALVe :|

...If you have not seen Valve's flaws than you are a fool, and I didn't say I hated Half-Life, but it is funny that the only time I play Half-Life I am never actually playing anything originally made by Valve.

...and no, DoomIII will not run on my Emachines, you have to have at least a decent computer to run it. :P

Hehe, that wasn't Bluey's interview. Unless he's started working for Gamespy now :paranoid:

*me makes plans to burn down BlueWolf's house and destroy all Gamespy related files

it is funny that the only time I play Half-Life I am never actually playing anything originally made by Valve.

I assume by that you mean you are referring to mods.

For one thing, I never said there weren't any flaws made by VALVe. But that doesn't mean you should outright hate them. That's a pretty strong word, don't you think? They haven't personally afflicted you or anything, so why would you hate them?

Secondly, it doesn't matter if it wasn't originally made by VALVe. Without Half-Life, there wouldn't be such a huge modding community that a lot of people made awesome mods for :P

once again I didn't say I hated Half-Life, its one of the absolute most modded games in history, but I do hate valve as a company. They are two-faced liers and backstabbers :P

--

Oct 22 2004 Anchor

Um, they are two-faced liers and backstabbers? How the hell would you know? You don't do business with them or anything, and their bad luck is their real downfall. They don't purposely try to make people hate them.

Half-Life 2 is coming out. Put a smile along, because VALVe delivered :P

Valve made mistakes, that hardly makes them backstabbers.

I would show you what I am talking about, but I have no idea where it was and Hammy-bob is the only person that I know that knows about it. He showed me something where VALVe came together with a bunch of game companies to create one large almost universal gaming unit that would hold servers, games, and such... well VALVe just kinda decided not to work on it and tell everyone they were... so a bunch of companies got screwed by them. Plus you don't know that VALVe didnt leak the source themselves... you know if you have a deadline to meet with a company like ATI and youre gonna fall short you do w/e you can to make yourself not look too bad. :/

--

Oct 22 2004 Anchor

The universal gaming unit transformed into Steam, you fool :P

You don't know about the truth about the source code, so you can't say you "hate" them because of something you don't understand.

Once again, HALF-LIFE 2 IS COMING OUT! ATI IS EXTREMELY HAPPY! I don't think they should care about it now that they're going to make millions when the game's released :P

...No VALVe did this about 3 years ago, with about 40 companies not to mention some pretty large companies such as Red Storm :P and Steam has nothing to do with any of those companies games... also Steam has to be the worst program besides IE I have ever seen, I am sure about 95% of the people here will back me up that WON was simpler, less buggy, and overall more user friendly than Steam. :|

--

Oct 22 2004 Anchor

Steam is awesome. I think it was a great idea, and I like it how all my mods are in one place that automatically update when a new patch comes out. Not to mention, all WON was, was a program that opened up when you played Cstrike.

WON is dead, Steam is not. It's as simple as that. It doesn't mean you have to hate VALVe because of it, nor can you call them liars and backstabbers when they're neither of those things :P

Highly doubtful. Most people have the common sense to have realised that Steam is simpler, less buggy and more user friendly than WON.

holy crap... well theres about 5%

Edited by: Hatel3reed

--

Oct 22 2004 Anchor

but you just said 95% would back you up. Have you really used Steam, or are you just listening to what other people tell you and come up with your own opinion? You have to really know what you're talking about before you make judgements, with all due respect.

Anyway, back to Half-Life 2. Anyone have any idea if the new Hammer (Hammer5) will be more user-friendly this time?

My Two Cents, yes you would. "What is TFC for Quake for 500 $ Jack."

And Frosty I have to add, CS Sucks my *insert here* because they couldn't find a work around on the custom models because some poeple are just lil pieces of sh** who liked to cheat and ruined it for all the other poeple out there that liked using custom skins/models LIKE The Jin-Roh Wolf Brigade CS seal Replacment Model as a example. Thats way Steam gets my Vote as a Thumbs down.

I myself believe that WON is more simple than Steam. Steam is more complex with the User Authentication system, but its all for the best. This keep the cheaters down, and its harder for them to get back in since you need a CD-Key. Its also good against pirates and the distrubution of warez.
