The following preview is about an Unreal Tournament 2004 modification titled Atlantis The game is set in the future and follows a power struggle between the human race and Atlanteans. Part 1 of this review follows the human race, their weapons characteristics, peaks, and weaknesses are explained briefly. Soon after, our reporters follow a human soldier into battle and write his story in a first person mode. Part two exploits the weaknesses, peaks, and weapons of the alien Atlantean race. Later on, you will read a letter translated from Atlantean into modern English that was found on an Atlantean cruiser after it had been shot down.

The war is at hand and battles have begun to breakout. Soon all of us will be in the biggest war of the time. The war between the Atlanteans and the humans. Soon, you to will be able to participate in this war but first, little things must be taken care of. Little things that are kept safe from the public. For now, what I have here to present to you fighters is a first look. Gentlemen, I am now reporting to you exactly what you will see from this war. The main difference from what you will be seeing is the engine. What you are seeing has been written off of the preview build tested in Unreal Tournament 2003, while the future build will be in Unreal Tournament 2004.

I began by taking my seat. I was ready for the excitement to begin. The excitement of knowing I would be fighting alongside other warriors for the survival of our species, the humans. I was able to use the weapons created for us in the future. What you will see are highly advanced guns, more advanced than any our time, of course. You will choose between two pistols and two rifles. Our first rifle would be the GRFN Project-36 (P36). Featuring a full ammo capacity of 30 bullets per magazine! It’s main peak lies in damage. This is a fast firing weapon with a very high damage and comes equipped with a scope. Unfortunately, even with what this gun makes up for in damage and fire rate it is perfect for short distance sniping, but over long distances it lacks a lot in accuracy. Close quarters action requires large volumes of lead, and that’s just what the GRFN SDA-20 delivers. This is spray-and-pray type gun, this weapon doesn’t have a scope, but it does have shotgun attachment for “close quarters” work. All in all, some excellent weapons.

I proceeded into the mission briefing room and sat down with some of my cronies and other soldiers. The operation assigned to us was Jawa. Our C-5 Galaxy carrying tactical documents on our upcoming moves was shot down by some Atlantean gliders. From the briefing, it seems like things have gotten worse and worse. A squad from another division was sent to this tropical crash area to find the C-5, but there has been no word from them for the past two hours. We fear the worst has happened. It looks like we have to come in and retrieve the data from the crashed C-5. After retrieving this data we must call in an air strike to destroy all those damn Atlanteans there. Anyway, the briefing is done, and I must go suit-up and prepare for the take off.

After a smooth take off and a nerve racking flight I'm now landing and ready to commence the operation. The weather out here is very rainy, it's horrible. We have managed to set up a base and we are now ready take actions, seeking for our c-5’s crash site. The crew seems very ready for their combat and have learned well from their training, such as positioning weapons, and our main goal in battles, teamwork. We began to cross the old wooden bridges over the swampy green water. We all ran and ran up onto the hills, scoping out for the C-5. Unexpectedly, we saw a plasma beam in the air and a mob of those alien scum running from the trees towards us. I quickly turned around and found an Atlantean had already stabbed my comrade Scott with one of their blades. The rest of us ran in while rays of light shot by me. All I could hear was the solid sound of gunfire and the phasing sound of the beams. I ran, as an instinct and I hid behind cover, and ahead of me? Ahead of me was the crashed and burned C-5. As I looked closer I found a tent nearby with some kind of unusual documents lying there. I quickly got up, marinating cover and looked both directions for any threat. I couldn’t see anything so I made my way down slowly to the site and through the field directly behind the tent. There were Atlanteans and a freshly slaughtered comrade right across the corner. I was spotted and they were coming closer. With my gun as my only friend left I leveled my P36 and fired at the two Atlanteans killing them both, leaving me inside the tent... Alone again. The rain was still falling down upon us, and I was able to see the ripples in the river. I could hear the rain still, even heavy fire on the grounds. I stood and took a breath from my long run of pushing the W button down and found the documents. I snatched them and began to radio in my buddies. I soon left the tent, and began trying to head back, still hearing the rumbling of the gunfire. I ran, I became curious as to why there were no guards in any direction and then a sharp sound, a sharp pain and darkness..

Atlantis brings a new game for us to discover. This modification has so much to offer, delivering two different species, the humans and the Atlanteans. The struggle for power still continues, for we do not know the result of this poor soldier fight - that’s for you to find out, as you take your seat in fighting this unusual war. This is only one of our two part feature. As you just read, the preview takes place in as a human soldier. The next part features the life of the aliens defending the Tropical Hell.

The Atlanteans are fighting for power and for control of the galaxy. The Atlantean species are far more advanced than the humans, and are much more powerful. They do not have access to all of their technology and their main goal is to open the SpaceGates and create a link to their homeworld once more becoming virtually unstoppable. The Atlanteans evolved from warriors, and through natural selection are the best fighters in the galaxy after long years of conquest and wars. The alien advantages lie in power and speed. Since they are tall, they are easier targets for the human weapons. Their powerful armor is also the worst camouflage and is visible in almost all situations.

The weapons of the Atlanteans run either on electricity or plasma. Their pistols are lightweight and carry 24 shots each. The Pulse Gun has a low recoil, high accuracy rate and can fire a charged blast to do more damage. Equipped with the Shock Gun you can deal out more damage but you have to recharge your pistol after 24 shots. Primary Weapons are the Trident and Assault rifle. The trident carries 21 shots and fires plasma balls however it does have a secondary fire mode of three rapid bolts firing at once. The accuracy of this gun is also high, but it’s recoil is too making it harder to fire fast. Fortunately, the damage is high so after a few good shots you can bring down any human. The assault rifle has a 41 clip round with a fair amount of recoil and a zoom. The alien technology is far advanced from the humans, but the weapons are fairly matched and you can mix and match based on the way you fight.

The following letter was found on a Atlantean space craft shot down while it was recharging:

Rh’aktah(greetings),
Commander I write to you now bearing gifts. We have shot down one of the human ships, and it has landed in a remote portion of a large wooded area known to the humans as the Amazon Rainforest. We have set up a small camp on the outskirts of the site and captured all aboard immediately following the crash. The ones that didn’t put up a fight have been retained and are being questioned, the ones that did met their deaths swiftly. We have found some tactical documents and are waiting to decode them, but as you know our technology as far as their language goes is still limited. Our radar has picked up a new craft approaching the area, no doubt in search of these papers, and their missing comrades. Our plan is to ambush them as they come out by hiding in the trees and leaving the papers at the crash site.
Our forces are positioned in trees on the north side of the planet as well as in the trees. We have squadrons set up all over to make sure we get into position as soon as the craft lands. The men crave the meat of these soldiers. I will keep in touch, I believe the human ship is close and I must sort out last minute tactics with the men.

Commander,
I was barely able to escape the battleground with my life, I am now going back to the Havens. The humans called in reinforcements and the were well aware of our presence in the area. Our ambush was foiled, and as we tried to change plans into a defensive mode the second wave of Humans landed and made their way through the crash site. One human with the papers was shot down and their precious item were returned, it seems all at once the enemy converged on the enemy documents. We did our best to defend commander, however the humans fought back savagely. I told my soldiers to call for reinforcements and request a fresh squad to help defend the information and bring it back to base to protect the technical data. Unfortunately, the second wave had technical problems and were delayed. My ground forces were dwindling and I called for a retreat with the data. As we ran back the humans advanced quickly, wiping out all our forces except for the ones with me right now. We are leaving and are unsure what happened to the data. We must assume that the humans got it and are gone, because their ship has been sighted moving. However, reinforcements did shortly arrive after our escape and there were reports of a small battle so we are unsure as to what happened. We are regrouping right now and will follow the ship closely and engage if we can. Fwa’thas (power) to Atlanteans.

Atlantis has all sorts of experience set, you can choose to take the role of a human or an Atlantean, fighting for your this planet earth. Atlantis is coming to you soldiers soon, with all sorts of features that probably haven't even been covered in this preview. I hope you enjoyed the first mod of the month since February.
