Competition

Exactly one year ago we ran a "Warlord" themed concept art competition which resulted in some amazing art depicting epic "bad guys" and humble "good guys". We are already running our own Left 4 Dead comp and now with Hellboy in-town to whip the bad-guys left and right, we have another we thought we would let you know about. We have decided to up the difficulty this time around and challenge you to create an army even "big red" will struggle to overcome. There are awesome prizes up for grabs (VIP passes to One Wizard World Event, Hellboy Bluray), so if you are feeling creative - head on over to our partner site running the event. You've only got until the timer below hits zero so get sketching!

This is the fifth Concept Art competition in a very short period of time - and we haven't had anything else. Concept art is such a small part of the modding process (and arguably, is often non-essential to the vast majority of projects), isn't it about time to do something else?

Not to play down the talents and abilities of the many (often fantastic) concept artists out there, but you can't just keep running concept art competitions every time someone throws money at the site. FIVE concept art competitions, which are usually *painting/drawing* competitions rather than actual concept competitions is detracting from the point of this site.

It's getting insulting for those who do the physical mod work. What ever happened to the 3d artists, the programmers or the level designers? Why aren't we giving them any opportunities to demonstrate their talents?

Enough with the painting competitions. This isn't PrettyPictureDB, it's ModDB.

I really have to agree with you. They need to have some best model, best map contests too..

But since this is not a contest by Moddb,it is a contest by another company. I dont think Moddb has a decision over it..

We do have a say in the process - obviously however we need to find a sponsor for prizes and concept art is hot at the moment. I'll push for a map / modeling / music / machinima contest next to give everyone a fair go to compete, be creative and challenge one another which these competitions usually encourage.

My complaint is that at least the L4D contest somewhat pertains to Moddb or gamers in general. This kind of whoring out (not to mention 30 Hellboy ads on every page) is almost a slap in the face. I understand you need money to keep things running but isn't there another way other than turning Moddb into a festering pile of ads like every other game-related page?

well this guy here is obviously exhadurating a bit. i see one ad on the side of the page. but i too would like to see some more competitions about other stuff. so many concept art contests and you'll start to see less and less artists actually participating

Yeh go on shee develop a fair way to have a programmer competition.

Art is easy to judge and what people like to see, programmers and the like, need to switch up for something else, if they want the same type of attention.

There's a difference to doing PR and Slapping ads on every page, scott is really doing neither, would you rather, you pay for your bandwidth, storage you use from this site each month, ads on every page with popups, or a competition mentioned a few times.
Get real blk
