Post feature Report RSS Character Customization

Character customization is an essential part of pretty much every RPG. Let's take a look at how Starfield - Constellation Edition's Story is tackling that issue.

Create your own destiny - your way.

  • 5 origin stories. 5 different classes. 5 races to choose from. Explore the bottom levels of Neon as a scoundrel, relying on your guile and stealth abilities to complete your tasks. Or start as the offspring of a renowned UC soldier, battle-hardened and rather letting your guns speak - not as subtle, but definitely packs a punch. Or do you want to become the ultimate academic, using knowledge and speechcraft to achieve your goals? Maybe you should start off as the scholar, creating a whole different level of approaching situations.
  • Join one of three different factions during the course of the game. Are you a beacon of the light? The Guardians might be dwindling in numbers due to the systematic persecution by the cult, but their leadership and wisdom might guide you to greatness and help you fulfill the difficult and dangerous task ahead. Or would you rather cast your natural affinity aside and remain a UC soldier? Blast your way through conflicts and make use of heavy weapons, explosives and other technical wonders to annihilate your enemies. Tough, no-nonsense warriors that know only their loyalty to the United Colonies. But maybe you have no alliance whatsoever and prefer to let credits speak? The bounty hunter guild is always looking for new recruits. Take out the most wanted of the galaxy, with stealth, smart tactics and the right gadget for the job at hand.

  • Rise in the ranks by completing quests and other favors, and ultimately choose your prestige class of the game. Any class can be upgraded to 3 very different classes, depending on your preferred playstyle. Either enhance your first choice or mix things up to create powerful combinations of abilities. You’re a bounty hunter, but being stealthy isn’t really your thing? No problem, become a saboteur and take out your targets with a bang. You’re good with guns and can throw a grenade precise enough to blow a womp rat to shreds (those things are notoriously difficult to hit, or so we’ve heard)? The tankbuster prestige is right up your alley.

  • Having joined one of these more or less dubious factions does however not protect one from the Sith that will tirelessly hunt you - no matter how much protection any faction promises. It wouldn’t be a true Bioware inspired RPG if your choices couldn’t drastically change your alignment...and ultimately the fate of the galaxy. The choice is yours and siding with the “enemy” isn’t out of the question - just be prepared for the consequences, whatever they may be...

  • The leveling system allows for a ton of customization. We really mean it. Listen, the premise is simple: Earn experience by defeating your foes or completing quests. Level up. Spend points on strength, dexterity, wisdom, charisma and intelligence. Meditate on your ship to level up, (so no more mid-battle level ups, we kinda hate that stuff). Each of these attributes unlock perks that you can acquire by spending “learning points” at certain teachers. To improve immersion, these skills can only be learned by said teachers and will play an animation that shows your progress. That includes grav abilities, should you have chosen that path, that is. You want to learn new melee styles, to further customize your combat style? Look for a master of the blade to teach you. But listen up chump, certain, more...let’s say “exotic” blade styles can only be taught by specific followers of the dark side.

  • Different endings for different choices. Again, your decisions will make a difference, but don’t be worried; This isn’t another “chosen one” story. You are merely one of many gears in those difficult times, the right person - in all the wrong places, so to speak.

  • Assemble your party and recruit up to 8 diverse and interesting characters that aid you in your quest. All of these characters have their own agenda, but seem to be bound to you by a common goal - survive the impending apocalypse. However, these goals might not always be achieved with the right means in place. Your alignment will inevitably cause friction, and party members can even leave your party or die as a result of your decisions - or lack thereof.

  • Gain the trust of your followers and complete their personal missions to not only make them true friends, but also unlock their special abilities and gear. What you do and say matters - especially in the eyes of your friends. Treat NPC’s and quest objectives to someone’s liking or fulfill special tasks for them, and you will gain trust points, shown in the party screen. Certain characters are even sensitive to the void, so should you have taken the path of the Guardian, teaching your methods to someone else, is entirely within the realm of possibilities.
