Just for curiosity, what is the problem which needed to be fixed and why is the sprite from the source version different?
1) The original sprite looks more like an Alpha version from 1997

Because the original sprite was from alpha from 1997
Most people don't notice it, but the sprite uses the alpha version of the alien grunt. Their is a comparison on my gamebanana submission of this mod. Gamebanana.com
