Prerequisites:
- Install HoMM5: Tribes of The East on Steam Deck
- Start the game once, so proton compatdata folders are created
- Install Protontricks from the Discover store
- Download MMH55 mod on Steam Deck
Steps to configure:
- Open terminal (Konsole) and run the following commands to create commands aliases:
echo "alias prot" >> ~/.bashrc echo "alias protontricks-launch='flatpak run --command=protontricks-launch com.github.Matoking.protontricks'" >> ~/.bashrcNote: This step is optional, it's going to create commands aliases, so instead flatpak run --command=protontricks-launch com.github.Matoking.protontricks you can do protontricks-launch - Restart the terminal so that the above aliases take effect
- Create the game folder inside the compatdata directory, so that the installer can find it:
ln -s ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 5\ Tribes\ of\ the\ East/bin ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15370/pfx/drive_c/ - Start mod installer and browse game directory in C:\Heroes of Might and Magic 5 Tribes of the East:
protontricks-launch --appid 15370 ~/Downloads/MMH55_RCXXx.exe
Note: Replace XXx with the name of the mod version your are installing. For example MMH55RC17h.exe - Browse the path of the game:
cd ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 5\ Tribes\ of\ the\ East - Backup original exe:
mv H5_Game.exe H5_Game.exe.backup - Set MMH55_64.exe as default one:
cp MMH55_64.exe H5_Game.exe - Launch the game from Game Mode.
- Game start fails with error "Failed to set display mode" - Game is probably launched in desktop mode which is not working. Try running it from Game Mode. If you manage to make it run from Desktop Mode please provide us the steps so we can update the guide.
I Managed to Install the Mod. But the Game Always Crashes at many Points while playing. Always in my turn.
I think the Problem is Point 5 - 7 from the Installation Guide.
At Point 6 and 7 the Konsole says "no such file or directory"
What am I doing wrong?
That guide was provided by community user, i don't have stream deck and cannot provide help.
I would advise to join our discord and ask there.
At what scenes the game crash?
On windows the problem was D. E. P. I but I don't know is steam deck has such prevention or antivirus system.
I think the Problem is, that i did not change the exe from step 7. But i cant figure out how i do it. Thanks for your answer. I will try discord
That is the cause! Using default game exe is not possible with the mod as so many things are changed.
The path is wrong in this guide. Both game .exes are in the /bin folder within the HOMM 5 directory. (Add that to the end of the line)

Forgot to mention that you need to install proton-tricks first.
I first opened HOMM in Desktop mode and had no issues running HOMM 5.5 in Desktop mode as well, BTW. Could be because I have a newer version of proton installed; not certain what Steam is using by default. I have 7-30 and 7-43 installed using ProtonUp-Qt
Can you tell me the exact command to install it and between which steps to add it so I can put it in the guide?
In step 4 you'd have to change to MMH55_RC17h.exe instead of MMH55_RC17g.exe if you have the latest release.
