Except Avatar and Twilight were only popular because they were popular. Sherlock Holmes ftw. Robert Downey Jr playing Sherlock Holmes? Awesome and ironic!
I like both. But players choice is almost always plagued by the "popular mods" that every one knows about. No one really browses the site for something new and unique, they just go for the most popular list. i'm guilty of this too unfortunatly. There's just sooo many different mods that its almost impossible to really just wander.(srry i just realized i screwed up on posting it in the right place:(
Not a chance. It depends on who the editors are. If some blokes who play only FPSs and not really anything else, the judgement will be always very prejudiced too.
Also there are some critics who don't know what they're talking about.
An example?
V for Vendetta: Sean Burns said that Natalie Portman "still seems to believe that standing around with your mouth hanging open constitutes a performance" ( Philadelphiaweekly.com )
Funny - but the author had forgotten about her performance when she was held and mildly tortured by V.
So, either blind or stupid. Or both. That's how critics do.
Human thing to err, eh?
But the point is that somebody who criticises, but have little knowledge, shouldn't be given a power to judge.
Little knowledge, let's take it objectively.
Guys/editors should know all or majority of games, to say the least. Then majority or all of mods. Impossible? Fairly so. That's why "Editor's choice" will be a prejudiced choice of a few people.
The same with a prejudiced choice of a majority.
Only GOD knowing everything would choose the best ones. B/c no-one would be able to know every single mod and every single game, then be a game producer + designer + coder to choose the best one.
And even if there would be a few judges knowing bits of such fields, they still would be somehow crippled.
That's the truth about Editor's Choice.
So no. Technically both would be interesting to watch, but neither of them will be entirely just. ;-D
I feel its hard to comment on the editors capabilities as they run the show, but at the same time there are so many mods they need to judge. So getting into the nitty gritty details of a mod are virtually impossible for an editor to do. I find they spend the better half of an hour or so playing through as much as possible then moving onto the next one.
This does remove a lot of potential for the longer mods to show their true worth, but I suppose at the same time it emphasises the idea of having an amazing start of the game to keep players captivated in the magic and keep it until the end.
as for the players opinion, well, its flawed and like a flock of birds they go where the rest of the flock flies - of course on this analogy, there occassionally is a bird who finds a good source of food, but the rest of the flock is soon to follow. Alas all too often the crowd seems to miss some good sources.
the players choice because as moding is mainly for the average gamer not for proffesional critics, but that doesnt mean that most of them couldnt beat some of the corporate titles out there
like mideast crisis 2 and Eastern front
Editors Choice, because hopefully they won't only choose Source mods.. :P
But I'm almost as much excited to see the Players Choice winners, because in the end mods are made for the players ;)
amen brother. I'm sick of seeing that 8/10 of the player's choice mods are made with the source engines... every single year. I still think the moty should be divided in two top 5, one for source mods and an other one for the rest...
Player's Choice interests me most. The Editor's Choice isn't as important to me because usually - for most sites at least - the victory is about popularity or whoever threw in money. I'm sure Mod DB works differently (I believe I've been here for only a year or two, but never took notice of the awards) but just saying... that the usual process.
If you need an example of which editor choices are like that, take a look over at IGN.
Editors' Choice. Simply put because I like to think of this site's editors as people of informed opinions, sure they might be biased but they're still more informed than the rest. Plus you don't have to worry about the validity of the choice (unlike Players' Choice where a certain mod gets more votes based on the community it's centered in). Fiasco with last year's Players' Choice just proves that :P
But this is just me, maybe this year around it'll be different, guess we'll have to see and find out.
Difficult!
I like both,
the Editors choose mods/indies which are (not always) so popular, they choose ones, which are "different". This not means theyre bad, it means their idea is something new in the modding scene.
But I also like the players choise, because theyre also some good ones
This was a tough one, but I voted players choice. One of the things that make MotY interesting are upsets, and an upset would be more interesting if it was chosen by the players.
Neither. Player's Choice is a popularity Contest and Editor's Choice is just the editor's opinion. But that's pessimistic of me, so I guess we'll wait and see.
for me it's allways going to be the players choice, after all, ModDB is a community based site, and as such I always look forward to players choice more than editors choice
for me its players choice.
cmon the games are themselves made of players and we spend most of our time playing these games so cheers to Players choice !!
Even though it's over at this point, editor's choice. We players tend to be....less than objective judges. Players choice tend to be rampant with fanboyism and raging about why XXXX mod sucks and why YYYY mod is so much better.
I'll never understand how these awards work. They aren't interesting for me in any other way than that I might actually learn about mods I didn't notice before.
Who wins? I don't care. Probably those who make it onto the frontpage most often...
Here is a link to see what the poll is about Moddb.com
Good man; Editors choice ftw ofcourse.
Editor's Choice.
If the Oscars were decided by popular decision, some Twilight film would had won if it were not for Avatar.
Except Avatar and Twilight were only popular because they were popular. Sherlock Holmes ftw. Robert Downey Jr playing Sherlock Holmes? Awesome and ironic!
I like both. But players choice is almost always plagued by the "popular mods" that every one knows about. hehe, i would say players
The thing is that most of the editors do not know what is good.
The players choice helps better to know what should come up.
Not a chance. It depends on who the editors are. If some blokes who play only FPSs and not really anything else, the judgement will be always very prejudiced too.

Again stresses the need for good PR
You just made me regret of choosing players choice =/
the players choice because as moding is mainly for the average gamer not for proffesional critics, but that doesnt mean that most of them couldnt beat some of the corporate titles out there

I usualy enjoy what the editors traps tend to japp about.
Editors Choice, because hopefully they won't only choose Source mods.. :P

amen brother. I'm sick of seeing that 8/10 of the player's choice mods are made with the source engines... every single year. I still think the moty should be divided in two top 5, one for source mods and an other one for the rest...
Thats because source is our daddy :P
But on a serious note I agree with everything you just said...
I only go with Source mods, it's bad I know. I have Doom 3 I've never checked out any mods for it along with other games. I feel naughty.
Also in the footage for the presentation there is never ANY in game footage outside of FPS games... so yea...
Well, both of them. But I voted players choice, because will take more time to appear if compared with the Editors Choice.
Player's Choice interests me most. The Editor's Choice isn't as important to me because usually - for most sites at least - the victory is about popularity or whoever threw in money. anyone who chooses "Mod the what now?" should be punished :P
lol I think those that voted for "mod the what now?" are not serious about it.
Players.
X number of users can't be wrong.
I hope.
Bush/Obama
SHIFT.
... Hohoho.
Editor's choice... since player's choice is gamed like hell by PR-Drama <.=.<
Difficult!

Editor is best, Players Choice is just a popularity contest of who can co-erce the most people to vote for them.
How about, both equally much? I don't always agree with the Editors, but I usually don't agree with the people at all. So it will be fun seeing both.
Neither. Player's Choice is a popularity Contest and Editor's Choice is just the editor's opinion. But that's pessimistic of me, so I guess we'll wait and see.
I would more go for editor choice, because you can tell mostly what the player choices are going to be.
Player choice of course... because, All that matter is whether the players like a mod... :D
I agree with others. Players Choice is about spamming and buying votes. I've enjoyed Editors Choice a bit more so it gets my vote.
Lets see...
Last year(If I remember correctly) MAP PACK for L4D won MOD of the year award...
So my vote goes for Editors Choice.
Player's Choice! There are many differences between films and games ;-)
I forget: Editor's Choice is not bad at all... =)
Please stop giving us your political ideology, korge ;-)
Do we tell you everyday about our political opinion!?
Sorry for these many comments :(
wow so many Mod the What Now? lol
836th!
Player's choice, because in the end they are the ones that play our mods.
Though I guess winning the editor's choice is somewhat more of a "official" recognition.
I think it will be interesting how the player's choice winner contrasts with the editor's choice winner, so I guess I'm looking forward to both.
for me it's allways going to be the players choice, after all, ModDB is a community based site, and as such I always look forward to players choice more than editors choice
HAH! Yeah ok...
Editor's choice. Player's choice is just what happens when you confuse popularity with quality.
for me its players choice.
cmon the games are themselves made of players and we spend most of our time playing these games so cheers to Players choice !!
Mod of the What now? XD
Even though it's over at this point, editor's choice. We players tend to be....less than objective judges. Players choice tend to be rampant with fanboyism and raging about why XXXX mod sucks and why YYYY mod is so much better.

All are even numbers, lol.
