The Panzer IV was the main medium tank used by the German army during the Second World War as well as the most produced (~8500 built) although it is largely overshadowed by its bigger brothers in the Panther and Tiger. It was originally designed as an infantry support tank armed with a low velocity 75mm gun (Ausf A-F1) whilst the Panzer III’s dealt with any enemy armour encountered. As the war went on it was continually up-armoured and up-gunned being fitted with a high velocity 75mm (Ausf F2-J) as the low velocity gun was not designed for tank combat. The version we are showing today is the Ausf D which uses the low velocity 75mm gun for infantry support rather than tank combat. The Ausf D was the first true production model of the Panzer IV (the Ausf A-C were mainly used for testing) and so the Ausf D was the first version that the tank divisions received.
