Dooming The Bar had been floating around Doomworld/ZDoom Forums since New Years 2021 in the form of a four-map demo that has since aged pretty badly. So when it came to overhauling the project I decided to bring it to ModDB for the benefit of Half-Life fans (who make up the other half of my target audience) who tend to release their mod content on this site.
But anyway, welcome to another HL2 Beta-themed mod that sets itself apart from the usual fare by remaking beta City 17 in GZDoom. You'll have the choice of going through an eight-map campaign covering the whole journey from Industrial to Kleiner's Lab (no bus ride, unfortunately) or two bonus maps covering locations unable to be weaved into the main C17 chapter.
The current incarnation of the mod doesn't feature NPCs or scripted sequences...yet. I intend to add them in the future alongside any bug fixes and quality of life improvements in a patch that'll bring a close to the project. I don't intend to attempt a full "old storyline" recreation since it never ends well (Raising the Bar, Insolence, Build 2046, Missing Information, Oldschool Story, the list goes on). I've thought about maybe tackling other chapters in isolation such as Vertigo and Streetwars but I don't believe the source material is cohesive enough to warrant it in the same way that City 17 was.
Stay tuned for the NPC/scripts patch that'll add things ranging from moving vehicles (including the infamous Shuttles!) to patrolling Combine units like Cremators and Metrocops.
I've been waiting for someone to use the GZDoom engine to create something that isn't dark/grungy/demonic.
It has so much potential that I feel isn't being tapped.
