Post news Report RSS Game Summary & The Grappling Mechanics

A short summary of what makes our game, and the two things you do with your grapple. (Gameplay Video)

Posted by on

Hey all!

I am Alex the programmer working on Tension. Basically I'm the one in charge of implementing these new game mechanics and making sure the game is simple and fun to play (although Cooper has more sweet job titles). Coop and I have been working on this game for a while now and since we finally got this ModDB page up I thought I'd tell the community a little about our game and where it stands so far.

First off, the gameplay is based on four mechanics:

In this post I will be talking about the two we currently have in the game which are the “Swing” and “Pull”. They are the two actions that can be performed with the grapple. The other mechanics I'll discuss at a later date with their own respective news posts. Let's jump in!

I figured a short video demonstrating the swing and two uses of the pull would be more effective then trying to explain it via text, although shorter text descriptions are available below the video.

Note: The textures and models seen in this vid are temp or rough drafts.

The Pull:
The pull is the action of using your grapple to pull you directly at a surface, or on to the top of one. Used to ascend buildings and sometimes ensure a precise landing on top of them. Player moves fast and in a perfectly straight line.

The Swing:
Fairly simple, the player is attached to the hooked surface with a springy, stretchy cable and swings from it with any force he is already carrying. Player moves slower than pull in a more controlled arc.

These two ideas may be simple but when strung together they can get quite complex, not to mention fun.

Don't forget to provide feedback!
-Alex

Dude you should use this grapple hook sound effect I made awhile back, I think I mixed some half-life 2 and DoD:S stuff and it turned out pretty cool.

very nice sound a bit loud though and may need some tweaking to make all the timing right other than that good work

The player should run faster, I think. Or maybe you could make the system where you run even faster if you move without stopping like here: Youtube.com

I can't even begin to imagine how many Gmodders are gonna request this as a SWEP the day it's released.
Good job, I really look forward to playing this.
Now, it would be better if it were multiplayer, but it's still great.

I havnt in my entire gaming expernce found palyer created content that made my jaw drop. What you have acheived here is something for the mod history (not that grapling hooks havnt been done, but to actually make then for a mod that works and looks promising), Im tracking this. Hope it doesnt die, and there are some future updates soon.

Trust us, fighting the urge to make the game pretty is veeery difficult. We promised not to touch anything graphical or audio until we were swinging through an orange city. :)
