"TL will use a hybrid hull/shield system. There is a single health indicator, and a single health that takes damage if hit. But if the ship got hit bad, an emergency automatic repair system takes effect, that will slowly repair the hull to the same point as it got activated at. For example, if a ship has 100 hull units. Then gets damaged to 30. It would still stay at 30 unless repaired at a capital/support ship. There is no way the pilot himself can fix it. But if the hull gets damaged to 20 and 30 is the point of regenerate, it would regenerate until it hits 30. Each ship might have different such regeneration points and regeneration speeds. Bombers would for instance have higher point to withstand the punishment of the capital ships. The interceptor would have very low regen point but high regeneration rate (its weak, but tough to kill if you arent hitting it as much). Capital ships would be similar to bombers, have a high regeneration point, but very slow regeneration rate."

And if anyone wonders, its oddly enough very realistic. If you design a spaceship, you would make backup systems and special important parts of the ship that could repair itself (assuming you have the technology), but not the entire ship as it would be far to costly.
