After more than 2 years in development we have decided to release a preview of our game for everyone. This release is purely a beta including some of our code and the maps. IT DOES NOT portray the full game (it can be considered a teaser) as many of the key features are intentionally saved for later releases. We are eager to hear your feedback to make sure we are on the right track with our ideas.

This BETA I release includes:

  • 2 teams, Agathia Knights and The Mason Order.
  • 3 Classes for each team, Archer, Footmen and Knights.
  • 9 main weapon choices for each team. 3 per class.
  • 3 Quests, three maps taken from the full storyline. Included are Dark Forest, Stoneshill and Westerlyn. Using the objective gameplay mode.
  • All current materials for maps and models.
  • All current models, players and props.
  • Windows Client/Server installer (Also includes binarys for running a Linux and Windows Server)
  • Linux server package (Same package as the Windows installer except for no installer.)

Thanks to all our dedicated fans who has waited a really long time for this, we hope you enjoy playing it as much as we have enjoyed making it. Just please be mindful that this is a teaser and will not reflect the quality of our final release - we just want you to enjoy what we have done thus far!.

In future releases you can expect more maps, weapons, effects and other coooool stuff. For the mappers, look our for a SDK which will be coming soon (along with a contest to raise interest).

sorry guys, I have to be honest, and I know this is a beta and is designed to be critiqued and improved upon by those playing it, so here I go.

Balance: Anyone who actually goes into the attack, is bound to fail. When a knight cannot catch an archer who is running backward and hits you with arrow after arrow, then death comes very quickly for anyone who plays anything other than an archer or crossbowman. The attacking team found that out quickly and was filled with those mentioned.
Mark: 3/10

Sound: I could hear people swishing swords from across the map, very loud and hard to tell where the sound is coming from, but overall, not too bad. I feel sound is a major component in making somewhere feel where you want them to.. try adding some sounds of birds and forest animals, also, since it is a medieval battle, try adding battle sounds, shouting, swords clanging and arrows flying, like all of the good WW2 battle games do, even DODs has it and makes you feel like there is action going on around while you are standing still...
Mark: 5/10

Animations: Fairly well done, though quite quirky if you know what I mean, not fluid but more mechanical, they need some more human randomness to them. I would suggest adding a couple of extra swings into each player.

Maps: simple, more like HL1 than 2, the displacements needed more to them and it felt like I was in a hole rather than a valley system... try a 3D skybox with mountains and maybe a village in the distance. Also, to run or walk around the maps gave me more of a sense of floating rather than being in armour.
Mark: 4/10

Overall: 3.75/10

Sorry guys, not being too harsh I hope, as I know how much work goes into a mod, but I am sure you don't want me to blow smoke up your chivalry. I would like you guys to improve it as it has great potential to be on par with Pirates Knights and Vikings... keep up the encouraging work and don't let old sods like me stop you modding...

Veru nice indeed, now you just gotta speed up for the final game!

2 years in developement, Im sure you got some feedback when you posted your idea and now you get feedback for the beta and I think if you don't speed up within 1 - 2 months you'll loose players as the game will be seen as "dead" until you after another 2 years drop off the final part

If you know what I mean, don't let this die like PVK II

All critique, bad or good is great. The only way we can improve is if we get critique. But i have to say that for a team of just a few doing it on their spare time its very hard of people to compare it with a game like hl2 that took 60 people working full time in the same house 4 years.

To D@rson07, i dont think you read captain source's review. Hes saying all things that can easily be fixed with given time. Think about it. You like the game yeah, but it'd be better if some things were to be fixed. Then it'll be excellent. Captain Source gave a good critique.

If you think giving an honest critique and suggestion's on how to improve is bashing, then I am wondering who should be posting?? Someone willing to help or someone only willing to use fowl language as his vocab does not include words greater than 4 letters? I can hear the echo of the potty mouth splattering his drool now... lol..

I am sure that any of the guys who have been involved in the mod would want an honest person rather than a yes man... I might be wrong, but I find that people say, "Well, it is a free mod, what do you expect?" Whether it is free or not, one should do their best and be comfortable enough in their abilities to take advice where needed and is given in the spirit it is... NOT bashing.... and thanks methulah...

I think the levels and the melee system are quite nice, though I have to agree about the archers being superpowered and the sound being bad.

Fun little mod.... needs some work, but could turn out to be a good mod. I suggest you add wizards, necro's, mage pets, and dragons!!! lol

Bad animations, bad levels, AWFUL melee, terrible sound (swords sound like tin cans and it reverberates loudly around the maps). I feel really evil being this critical but there are not many saving graces to this mod, some of the textures are alright I suppose.

Again I feel really bad... I'm sure the team worked really hard getting this out there but I find it utterly unplayable and awfully implemented. To be brutally honest I think the whole gameplay mechanic needs rethinking completely, Pirates, Knights and Vikings and Dark Messiah got it right for the most part if you were to 'borrow' elements and improve upon it you might just have something. For the time being though I think the developers need to take a look at what they've got and make some tough decisions before it'll actually be any fun.

I think the 2 reviews previous to my post are a bit on the harsh side. I think for a first beta it does alot more things right than wrong. The archers issue is im sure a known one they can easily fix with the backpedal speed. The melee is about as good as I think a source fps mod can achieve, not really anyones fault but I dont think fps melee is really 2 things that go well together. The maps are pretty cool, the server I was just on was running 8 vs 8 I believe and I only notice a few issues with performance. The art/animations arent all that bad, for a free mod I think they are just fine but sure if they can be improved upon thats good. For a first beta I think its pretty solid. The game never crashed, the objectives work, could be a little more clearly marked on the minmap along with the ammo bins but for a mod I enjoyed it for the most part. I think theres alot of areas that can be improved upon but releasing and getting real playtesting done is going to aid in that I am sure. Keep up the good work.

Haven't tried it because of a more bitter than sweet experience with PVK II, but CaptainSource you were TOO harsh - you say thing like ''animations are fairly well done'' and give 'em 3/10 ?!? - You have all right to do that if it was a commercial product, but it' first beta of a mod!

We had the same in our mod until very recently. It's a very quick and simple fix.

I'm gonna check it out because I simply love castles of every ilk.

ITS A ******* MOD, not a retail game, don't you people understand that? The only mods that are amazing to you people are the ones that took 3 years to make (like insurgency) so stop bitching about it and get the **** off moddb

I agree. I was confused a bit at first, but the melee system isn't all that bad. I like how there's multiple actions to be had with the weapons, definitely adds some variety to the battles.

The models look great and the maps aren't half bad looking either. The only problems I've found are too few spawnpoints, there were quite a few telefrags when multiple people spawned at once and got stuck.

It's a very good beta as far as I'm concerned.

To captain source, there is a difference between critiquing a mod and then saying its the worst mod you have ever played, it's a beta, people are acting like it's the real game. All I ask is that you congratulate them for finishing the beta and to show some respect.
