Hi all;
This tutorial covers the installation of White Night, but since it is a total conversion for Amnesia: The Dark Descent, it also applies every total conversion mod.
First of all, I don't have a Mac, so Mac information is completely theoretical.
What is a Total Conversion?
This wiki article pretty much explains the basics of a total conversion mod in general. Since total conversion mods are NOT custom stories, basic way of installing custom stories won't work. I mean, if you put White Night into your custom_stories folder, it won't show up because the structure is completely different.

Windows
Default installation folder of Amnesia is:
- for Steam:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\amnesia the dark descent- for Retail:
C:\Program Files\Amnesia - The Dark Descent\redistWhen you open this folders, you will see your Amnesia.exe; and this is your root folder.
Now, open the file you downloaded, white_night.zip, open the white_night folder inside it; and copy everything you see there to your ROOT FOLDER; where your Amnesia.exe is.
After extraction, your Amnesia folder should look like this:
- for Steam
- for Retail
Troubleshooting
- Please not that, if your Amnesia installation is installed in a language other than English, you might need to set your main game to English. You can solve this issue by doing these:
"Change startlanguage=YourLanguage to startlanguage=english in main_settings.cfg, just that."

- If Steam doesn't work for White_Night.bat; try to exit Steam completely, then double click on White_Night.bat. This will open Steam again and this time White Night will work.
- 'I had the same "Amnesia.exe cause an EXCEPTION_ACCES_VIOLATION in module Amnesia.exe at 0023:004A67A8" error, reinstalled in English language and still wasn't able to run it. Then i deleted the Amnesia folder in C:/users/"your account name"/my documents, the one that have my profile and saves (Of course i made a backup of the folder), and finally got it running. Hope it helps others with this issue."'

Mac
There is a Frictional Games Support entry which covers the basic process thoroughly and it explains better than me: Support.frictionalgames.com
This one is a bit tricky. If you installed Amnesia as an application:
- Right click amnesia.app and choose Show Package Contents
or, if you are using Steam (credits to: Zumper):
- Add the files in "~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/amnesia the dark descent/"
- Go on Steam, and then Set Launch Options
- Add wn_config/main_init.cfg
- Click on OK, and then start the game and your done!
This will open your root folder. Do the same extraction with Windows. However, keep in mind that .bat files doesn't work on Mac. So here's how you run White Night:
- Open the terminal and then you can type (assuming you installed Amnesia in Applications):
open /Applications/Amnesia.app --args wn_config/main_init.cfg- You can also use Applescript and create bat like launcher:
Go to Applications/Utilities and start the AppleScript Editor then type:
do shell script "open /Applications/Amnesia.app --args wn_config/main_init.cfg"and save as... Application and then it is good to go.
Linux
Installation is same as Windows, but this time you have to have proper rights for your Amnesia folder. Also, keep in mind that .bat files doesn't work on Linux either.
After installed, open a terminal and navigate it to your Amnesia installation folder, where your Amnesia.bin or Amnesia.bin64 exists, then run the Amnesia with adding wn_config/main_init.cfg to your command line.
Desura
You can use Desura to install White Night, or any other total conversion mod for Amnesia, on your Windows or Linux machines. It works perfectly.

What about running it using Bootcamp or WINE?
You are using WINE to run a Win32 application while it has native Linux support, even for x64? Well, then you should be able to use Whie_Night.bat then...

Gah! please help me I need a dumb mans way to install this on a Mac OS X version 10.6.8. I understand how to install the mod if amnesia was in my applications, but its not. I have it installed through steam! Please tell me theres still a way to get this mod working. :/ I've been trying for several hours and really want to play it!

ok i downloaded the file and did everything exactly the way you told me abut when i double click the the file to launch the game the black box appears very quickly and than disappears and nothing happens, help!

yes i did still nothing is happening ill try to re-install it again and see if it will work.
Hi, I don't know if you ever heard of this before, but I have a problem with the flashlight, it doesn't lit at all :s
I mean, when it's on, I see the flux come out of the flashlight but it doesn't reflects on walls and everything.... Is it a problem with my graphic card?
Post your hpl.log under Documents/Amnesia/White_night to me via pm.
For me its just saying validating existing files... do i have to wait a hour or what? please help me and my friend told me about this mod, i hope that i don't **** on my pants xD
White Night doesn't overwrite existing files, probably you are doing something wrong.
im trying with the mac way but it says "Could not load main init file: config/main_init.cfg" any tips how to do?
Probably wrong installation.
Mmkay... Followed instructions 100%, even re-did it to make sure everything was done correctly... but if I open White_Night.bat, it loads the regular Amnesia....... If I click Continue, it continues my previous game. If I click New Game, its a new Amnesia game.... ? D:
Where did you buy the game from? If game loads main_init file successfully, it will open White Night, if it can't load it, then it will give a message: "Could not load main init file: config/main_init.cfg"
Either you didn't install it correctly, or there is something weird going on with your Amnesia installation. Use Desura, it'll work.
So when I try to install this mod on mac, it asks to replace certain folders (like materials, textures, etc.) and from what i can tell from these instructions is that you don't want that to happen. So how do I move all the folders into the amnesia folder without replacing them? I think if you click "don't replace" then it just doesn't move the folders where you want them anyway, so is there a way to merge folders or can I just move the contents of the folders into the existing ones for amnesia? If I could figure this out i could probably play the mod.
It doesn't ask for replacement, it asks for merging. There is a difference.
Either way, you can open the folders which asks for replacement, and drag their content to respective folders.
hi i was trying to install it the way i normally do but when i tried the way i do it wont come up and i also dont have it on steam so i cant do it the allocated way
The way normally do? What is it? You know White Night is not a custom story, and I've thoroughly explained the installation process, even there is a video.
hey, I got some problems with the mod.
every time i run the game i have some problems with the graphics (i think).
for exemple, there are places that im can't see some walls, i just see through them or that i can't see corpses in some rooms at the game. i know that because i checked some dude walkthrough in youtube and it seems just fine there.
i hope you understand my problem, if you don't i'll try to make the explanation easier.
Sounds like something is quite wrong with the installation. Try to use Desura if you are on Linux or Windows.
Actually, i did used Desura. When i tried to install it like the video said, the menu of amnesia (the one before the game actually running) didn't show a link to the mod. But i will try to install it again via Desura and i'll update you about the result.
Actual game won't give you a link to White Night, how come did you think it will? This is a total conversion, and on Windows it's better to run it with White_Night.bat if you are not using Desura.
I did run it with White_Night.bat file and than it opens me a CMD window which brings up the menu for amnesia and not for the mod.
Same Launcher, different game. If you are note sure what you are doing, using Desura is the best solution.
Hi. I have problem. I buyed this game in local shop. This is Polish version of Amnesia: Dark Descent called Amnesia: Mroczny Obłęd. I copy all files into root game folder "Amnesia: Mroczny Obled" and .bat file does not start "White Night" but start "Amnesia:Dark Descent"...I tried to install again "White Night" with Desura but effect is the same. White NIght not running but Amnesia: Dark Descent starting from .bat file. Please help. I want to play this masterpiece.

Your installation seems correct. Did you update your game to v1.2 (Justine patch). Keep in mind that same launcher will be opened, but when you start the actual game, it should be White Night.

Yeah installation is correct. This is installation straight from DVD "Mroczny Obled" first name of installation folder was "Amnesia: Mroczny Obled" i do everything what was in tutorial including patch 1.2 but Whhite NIght wont start BUT always start Amnesia: Dark Descent so i installed game again and named installation folder for "Amnesia - Dark Descent" but this wont help (yeah i installed patch 1.2 too) everytime i start game from .bat file it starting Amnesia: Dark Descent. It's impossible to get in game White Night. I want this game so much.
I tried to install conspiracy mod and this mod is running too in similiar way by starting .bat file but conspiracy works. White Night not starting. Is any other way to run this ? Maybe i should run on english version of game ?
This might be the issue, White Night doesn't support many language at the moment. Can you try it?
It works on english version (not that what i buyed in shop) I rather dont want to tell from where i have this other version but it works.

If it's not launching, it's either wrong installation of WN, or your Amnesia is not in English.

Im using windows 7 and everytime i click the white night.bat it opens the window close it the normal amnesia screen pops up
NOTHIN els but play game or change option is visible and i tried even looking inside the custom story inside the game nothing there too..
i did everything like the instruction read the troubleshoot bu nothing i cant seem to start playin white night since its JUST NOT THERE

Hi there, after hours of messing around last night, I finally managed to start the game, however, there is no dialogue sound - the part where I am in Sophia's office near the beginning, she doesnt say anything, nor my character. I think my files are in a bit of a mess as there was no option to merge, so I had to do it manually. Any ideas what needs changing?
Spec - late 2011 Lion Macbook Pro, running amnesia from Steam.
Also, the tutorial isnt very clear - for the steam version, I don't have to do the applescript code things do I?!

For steam you don't have to do an applescript, just add the arguments to the start up options.
However, it seems like you didn't install correctly as it seems some of the files are not there.
Just extract the zip to the root folder.
I added the wn_config/main_init.cfg to the launch options on Steam, which is how i got the game to work, and everything is fine except character voices.
When you say extract the zip, is that, open it up? (what i did).
And what is the root folder for mac, cant see a .exe .
Do you know the name of the file for the voices? Maybe it is lost somewhere in my confusion.

It's unlikely for them to get lost if you made a correct installation...
Put lang folder of WN installation into your Amnesia installation, and root folder is already covered in tutorial.
Do you only have to put the WN folders into the main amnesia dark descent file and leave them there by themselves - i.e. you dont have to put WN sound file into Amnesia sound file and WNgraphics into the amnesia graphics file?
