Voice of War, an interactive movie created by Michiel Frankfort & Wiebe Giebels, staring Hilde Segond von Banchet. This project is our European Master of Media and Arts graduation project, started 1-1-2009. All rights reserved!

The movie is finished and so far it has been received very well. We are still working on making it a downloadable mod so that anyone with Unreal Tournament can experience the movie for themselves but we still have some technical things that needs to be fixed before we can upload it. For those that can't wait, below are the links of three movies which show the different paths of the movie. The first movie shows what happens if you don't do a thing. Yes you can actually get to the end to the movie withouth having to do anything, as this is not a game which you need to beat. The other movies show the different path you get when you make choices during the movie and it also shows how the audiance can rotate the camera around.
Well thats enough talk for now. Sit back, push that play button and enjoy the movie!

Our little movie poster:

We originally started from the idea that games tend to be bad at storytelling and we wanted to do something about it. Some games just don?t put much effort to it but often when games do want to tell a good story it often fails none the less. The problem lies in the collision between story and interaction. We want to know why it is that the two elements collide and want to find a way to solve it. In a later stage we narrowed the concept down to an interactive movie. It still has the same issue that games have and it gives us focus on the core of our concept because we no longer have to focus on game design.

New Stills:

New movie: Lilly sits on the couch, and Susan (you/player) doen't recognize a song she just sang. Lilly is a little pissed....

Test movie, created for our Graduation Mock-Exam, March 2009:

Lilly in Unreal Engine 3, using custom build fake Subsurface Scattering (SSS):

Interface preview:

An update (28-07-2009):
Lilly needs a distraction, otherwise she will get depressed:

Full body motioncapture, using optical bodymotioncapture provided by the University of Utrecht, and a custom-build (by me, haha) facialcapture system inside Maya.

Nice Mocap movie:

Accessibility is an important element of our project. Everybody must be able to play/view our movie. We don?t expect our user to have any skill or technical knowledge. Even if the user doesn?t do a thing the movie will play on and finds its way to the ending and it won?t result to a negative ending like you would have in games.

Full body mocap, no cleaning jet....:

The result is an interactive movie where interaction and story blend. The interaction doesn?t allow the viewer to actually change the story but gives them the possibility to attain more or different information. It will give the viewer a stronger connection with the characters and the world in which they life.

More mocap, to keep you happy!

This looks great, team. (Clearly it's still actually in the 'Coming soon' status mode) but I'm looking forward to the release!

For thos that asked whars download link read top next time it says "We are still working on making it a downloadable mod so that anyone with Unreal Tournament can experience the movie for themselves but we still have some technical things that needs to be fixed before we can upload it."

I think the issue is more that it clearly states "released" as opposed to "comming soon" which is more accurate since that is what the first paragraph clearly says. If it states "released" then your going to see that sort of thing (people looking for the download link rather than reading).

I would personally save yourselves the headache and at least re-classify the mod as "comming soon" since the status relates to the mod and not the movie. I think that is what is causing the confusion, but that's just my two cents.

Agreed, why classify your mod as released when it isn't. It's only going to lead to confusion, questions and complaints.

On the plus side it sounds like a very interesting project and I hope you manage to get a download up in the future.

In the mod profile you can read: PS3 & PC. Before asking, read the whole info, please. It takes less time than to writing it for asking obvious things. That is what I do when I like a mod first of all.

Btw, this mod is simply amazing.
