Apps! Apps ahoy!
Hello beautiful people of ModDB!
Huh. Two months since the last update. I guess time does pass by rather quickly when you aren't looking. Don't worry, I'm still developing the mod, it's just that I've been busy with some other projects of mine. Anywhoo, what have I been up to in Uplink OS' case? Most importantly, I finished recreating and implementing all of the games' apps!
One of my targets with the mod is to not modify the original code, but to add everything on top. This, of course, directly affected some of the systems, hence the longer time to get the apps done. I had to re-write the whole Task Manager system, since the old one didn't give me enough room and information to add the new UI on top. This also brought a few welcomed changes:
- you no longer have to drag an app to the target element, as it can find the target on its own (for example, the Password_Breaker); while this has the drawback of taking that drag-drop-start mechanic the player does, it helps a lot during time critical missions.
- the apps that acted actively on a list element (ex. files, logs) are now accessed through the right-click menu; this, again, hastens the deleting or copying process immensely.
- you can now close apps from the Task Manager.
After that I got back to the games' windows and finished the remaining content: the LAN and the Cheats screens!
The LAN screen behaves exactly the same as the old one, with the added bonus that you no longer have to click the Back button to, well, go back (which was infuriating sometimes). You now just click on the last element in the link before your current location and that's it!
So what's left? Well, in terms of content there are some screen interfaces (web pages) left to tackle and the intro and game over screens. After that I'll do a quick polishing pass and get ready for the BETA! :D While it does sound like I'm close, I think that it will take about 2 or 3 months until then, so please don't hold your breath!
That's about it for now. Thanks a lot for reading and, of course, for your kind messages! You guys are awesome!
Happy modding!
