on sternguard vets whats the better of the pair between kraken rounds and plasma guns against armoured infantry like other marines? whats the big differences between them in role? they both lore and description say they are used for taking down armoured targets and cost about the same. and while we are at it, what about the melta gun?

Are we talking about in-fluff, in-game or tabletop?

Generally a plasma gun is in many way superior to a bolter, even one filled with kraken rounds. in-fluff even the smallest of plasma weapons has the capability to take down a heavily armored tank short of a land raider or baneblade in a single charged shot. The bolter does have a longer effective range and are much faster at mowing down lightly armored troops and when filled with kraken rounds a bolter's range and armor penetration increases even further. A kraken bolter has a faster firing rate and a better range, but falls short compared to a plasma gun when it comes down to dealing with vehicles or terminator like infantry (especially the latter). Also a plasma gun always has that small chance of exploding in your face like a plasma grenade. So a kraken bolter is essentially a weaker, but safer alternative.

Now for the melta gun. A melta gun is without a doubt the most powerful of all the special weapons SM, SoB or IG troops can be equipped with. They are the premier/leading anti-tank weaponry because of their famed ability to melt through virtually any material and vaporize infantry like a hot knife through butter. Compared to a plasma gun a melta gun is a relatively stable and much more common weapon. it's also more destructive and has some effectiveness even against void shields. It does have one drawback however....it's pityful range. It has a shorter effective range than a flamer, which prevents it from ever being a standard-issue weapon. To use a melta weapon requires that person or vehicle to go in close and personal, maybe a bit too close for comfort, but luckily the weapon is strong enough to obliterate nearly anything standing in your way. It's used most commonly as a anti-tank weapon by ambushing troops, but has the capability to serve a lot more roles in a skilled user's hands. For all it's power it's not the imperium's favorite anti-tank weapon, that goes to the lascannon.

thank you for the answer. im sorry I was unclear, im talking about in mod though I love the bit of lore because ive often wondered about it. so I think we can assume the meltas have the shorter range in mod, ive seen it, so that leaves kraken rounds and plasma against heavy infantry.
