Yup, without any oxigen in space an after burner has 0 effect. There's a reason petro called it, power to engines, and not after burner.
Y-wing's afterburner's works by firing anti-proton into the engines. And its only works for a limited time as the engine themselves get so hot that they risk disintegration of the entire body structure. (Yes I'm ripping off the ME codex)
And Geroenimo this is Science fiction, not to mention it is set in the star wars universe, A universe that follows little hard Science. So cut us a little slack will ya? None of us has a degree in space travel.
Also, there really should not be fire, or any sound from ship engines, and the lasers should be moving at the speed of light so we shouldn't be able to see them (or even out run them). So why let a little thing like afterburners cause trouble.
My thoughts EXACTLY
Actually, all of them have some half-assed explanation like:
1.The fires are created from the oxigen inside the ships.
2.The sound we here are sounds comes from each ships cockpit/engine room.
3.From what I understand, that wars laser's of "blaster's" to be more accurate, are more like accelerated energy bolts rather than actual laser, hence the reason of seeing them with our spectrum.
But really, this is Science fiction, while we all like reference from real life Science, it's still largely space magic(literally in Star wars case)! So like once one criminal with major mental issue's once said: "Why so serious"?
