MAN..... magic effects look like crap

You're harsh, those look pretty good imo
They're a pretty nice effect; the blue trails leave an ominous fog behind akin to gunpowder smoke, which adds to the power behind the attack.
If you dislike it, and you're a 'serious critic', say why. Otherwise, you're just a cynic and that's neither fun nor helpful.
