A collaborative single player campaign for Unreal 227 taking place in a mysterious cave system spanning 12 levels!
This is a great romp that has some of the most creative levels I've seen in Unreal. As different as they are, the various settings all end up fitting together nicely at the end of the pack, which I found very satisfying. Everyone involved did a lovely job contributing to this new classic!
I was enjoying this one until I got to the latter bits of the map "Forgotten Places", where I was faced with infinitely respawning pupae and spent more than 30 minutes fighting a war of attrition against them, going in and out of the entrance of the temple to funnel the pupae into the blast radius of my dispersion pistol, to buy myself some time so that I could peek inside of the next room, as I tried to figure out how to progress, only to then die to an ever growing swarm of critters as I attempted to backtrack to the other side.
After a few times of doing that I realized that I wasn't really having fun anymore and quit.
The Descent clearly has some very talented mappers behind it, and I enjoyed their creativity for my brief journey through the mod, I have no doubt that there are some great times to be had beyond the section where I gave up on it, and if you're willing to push through that section, I'm sure you'll find it worth your time.
My suggestion for a future update is quite simple: cut it out with the infinitely respawning enemies, that's never fun in any game. If that change happens, I'll probably give this one another go, because I want to see the rest of the mod. I'll make sure to revise the rating I'm giving it now too.
A 5-hour journey of pure joy and wonder that any Unreal fan should try out. Each map offers a cool gimmick, introducing new and unique situations that haven't been seen previously in the original campaign. With such display of high quality, passion and love for the game, it makes for a great representation for the entire community.
