Report RSS Star Trek Armada 3: An Overview of all 4 Races

A run down of all 4 factions and there general strengths and weaknesses.

Posted by on

Now are you sitting comfortably? Got a drink and a snack? Better get one cause were going on a knowledge trip.

All 4 races have dramatically different styles of play, each side must be able to use its strength to their full advantage in order to survive. This news post won't give away any ship details that's something you'll have to find out for yourself.

The Federation

The Federation is a peaceful amalgamation of races across the Alpha quadrant. Founded in the 2160's after the devastating Earth-Romulan War the Federation expanded outwards absorbing new races and
cementing its place as a galactic power.

Strengths

The Feds are the economic powerhouse of the Alpha Quadrant, early game economic research ensures the Feds early dominance of the markets. They can easily expand and the economy can easily support this, as a result they only get bigger in size and benevolence. Fed diplomacy is also incredibly persuasive as is their culture and can spread rapidly across the stars. This form of indirect warfare can cause havoc behind enemy lines allowing your ships to easily waltz in. Spread the Fed, build up a strong infrastructure and you’re bound to be successful.

Weaknesses

Whilst you may have plenty of money your ships are not going to be up to par weapons wise with the other races until mid to late game. Average construction times in comparison to other's can leave you with ship deficit, forcing you to dig in with Outposts and Starbases until you have a large enough fighting force. Not only that but if you're been constantly raided by opposing forces you could find yourself running out of money fast. Expanding too quickly could also result in many systems undefended allowing raids behind your lines, gutting you from in the inside.

The Klingon Empire

The Klingon Empire was created after the Klingons fought off the Hur'q off their homeworld, slowly but surely they expanded conquering lesser worlds. Klingon space however was lacking in the resources they needed to fight and thus they did what Klingons do best. Invaded other empires.

Strengths

The Klingons are all about fire power, the forward weapon arcs ensure Klingons hit everything in the first salvo dealing a crippling blow. They are also incredibly manoeuvrable which allows them to get
back in the fray as soon as possible. Klingon industry is also incredibly lean, they make ships incredibly fast and coupled with superior firepower can make sure their fragile economy never gets touched. As long as the Klingons are at war they are safe and if the borders are attacked the Klingons have strong
defences waiting for them.

Weaknesses

The Klingon economy is not designed for a war of attrition, a deliberate crippling attack into Klingon territory could ruin them. It also takes a whilst before the Klingons also get the necessary economy

upgrades to compete with the other factions. Keep external threats away your core territories until you have at least a healthy income to support your further excursions into hostile space. Klingon ships are not designed for survival, the weaker shields are made up for in bigger guns. Getting bogged down in a fight could be costly and not having the money to replace your lost ships could be a disaster.

The Romulan Star Empire

The Romulans are secretive race that is an offshoot of the Vulcans. Enigmatic and always in the shadows the Romulans don't take kindly to other races and as a result are usually incredibly xenophobic. When the Romulans make an appearance it is always in dramatic style.

Strengths

The Romulans excel at information gathering, they can track all ships at warp as well as spy on any planet they see fit. This gives the Romulans an advantage in attacking when and where they like,
hitting the enemy in the soft parts and causing massive disruption behind their lines. Romulan ships are also designed for war, the massive plasma torpedoes deal massive damage in a few shots, combined with disrupters can leave most fleets reeling. Romulans also have the power to fortify their space late game
to obscene levels, the result been to unconquerable levels.

Weaknesses

The early game Romulan will find himself with poor and a limited amount ships to begin with. It's not until the mid to late game do the more powerful ships become available to you. Therefore careful
deployment of ships and defences will ensure your survival. Romulans ships though not as bad as Klingon ships have weaker hulls but the shields somewhat make up for this. By the time other races have escalated the conflict the Romulans could be somewhat behind.

The Borg Collective

The Borg are race of cybernetic beings connected together by a hive mind. Led by the instinct to assimilate technology, knowledge and biological finesse to pursue perfection. The Borg are akin to a
virus absorbing and adapting to any conditions that is thrown at them.

Strengths

The Borg are the strongest faction in the game. They have the most powerful ships which can take on fleets much larger than their own. The longer Borg ships are in battle the higher the mitigation rate goes up allowing them to eventually adapt. The Borg also has the ability to build Transwarp gates in their gravity well allowing for rapid movement across their territory. However these are not available until late game. They also have an effective economy throughout the game and will have a steady supply of resources as long as they have enough.

Weaknesses

The Borg don't have any, unless it’s another Borg player. Well they do early on, a rapid attack by a combined fleet of enemy players can lead to defeat. Borg stations also take up a lot of logistic space
which requires them to expand much further than the other races. Borg ships at impulse are also incredibly slow, so it is possible to outmanoeuvre them and attack their undefended systems. There also isn't a lot of Borg ships early on too because they take up a ton of slots.

Feel informed? Good! We have paid careful attention to how each race plays and feel. Also check out Captain Shacks channel XPGamers he gives the mod community the lovin' it needs so say Hi and watch his stuff. AND don't forget to vote for us for MotY!

The mitigation rates allowing the Borg to adapt sound awesome. It seems like it will make the Borg more realistic, and an even tougher threat, which is what the Borg should be.

The Borg are well and truly the nasties of the lot. Give them a bit of a lee-way and your empire becomes Self sealing stem bolts for the Borg.

I don't particularly want to be made into a self-sealing stem bolt... "Once more into the fray. Into the last good fight I'll ever know. To live and die this day. To live and die this day..."

yet just openly charging them don't work too well either.

It's better than the alternative... It'd send a chill down my spine if the team has used Deanna Troi's line from Best of Both Worlds (or was it First Contact?) "We've received word from the fleet, they've engaged the Borg". That would put a sense of dread over the entire remainder of the game... For me anyway.

Interesting, sounds similar to SOA2 for each faction if you dont mind me saying, BUT these are how these races actually are so that is inevitable in a sense.

So what are the odds of say, a late game Klingon and Fed alliance defeating a more or less fully developed Borg player? How hard would it be?

I'd say.... Would you like one or two cubes of sugar with your inevitable assimilation?

This sound AWESOOOOOME! *shredding the air guitar*

No really! The Borg really sound like BORG and not just some "a little tougher enemy"!
Can't wait to play them and show the others that Resistance is indeed futile ;)

Stupid question, though there's not a lot of stupid questions out there.

What was your favorite faction you created specifically for this Mod? @DevTeam.

I can't wait for it's release so I can download it. So GL HF and I hope you don't get assimilated by the Borg. =P

Since I am going to be playing the Borg, Romulans and the Klingons probably most of the time since the Federation needs a break, though I enjoyed Star Trek: Armada and Armada II's storyline. >.>

Oh can't wait to play this. I do have a question which may of already been covered. Will you be doing anything with the factions in terms of loyalists and rebels like in vanilla rebellion? Ie rebel feds could be section 31 for example.

just a quick tip: use siege frigates against the borg since they dont have shields. and, another tip to fighting the borg as non borg: BE ROMULAN! for some reason the rommies really know how to teach the borg the ways of defeat, one time i sent 4 tac cubes, 7 assimilators, 12 spheres, and the borg titan against the full force of a normal cpu's romulan fleet. needless to say his d'deridex cruisers just wouldnt die, even 2 or 3 pyramids vs 1 d'deridex is a definite loss for borg.

I fought the Borg as a fed player and the first battle was pretty much Wolf 359 - my entire fleet got destroyed! While the Klingons and Romulans got my back, I rebuilt an army of almost entirely steamrunners and the Borg got ANNIHILATED - long range weaponry is apparently their weakness.
