The two-cylinder BMW R11, of 750 cc displacement, was used by the Reichswehr between 1929 and 1934, and saw partial service until the end of WWII. This was the first BMW cycle with a stable box frame, which was well adapted to use as a sidecar cycle in daily military action. During its five years in production, it was constantly undergoing technical improvements. For example, the wide fenders originally used were replaced by narrower ones, so that much less mud could get stuck around the wheels during off-road use.
