Howdo,Welcome to the Salamanders mod for Soulstorm, which adds a new race, the Salamanders chapter of the Space Marines to your game of Soulstorm bringing new units, new tactics, new AI and a new map.To play, download and run the installer, then from the title screen go to Game Manager and select the Salamanders Mod.
You will also need Jones' fantastic Objective Points mod to enable the custom Salamanders LP, and you can get this from the first post of this thread Moddb.com
The Salamanders are a chapter who come from the planet Nocturne, which has very high gravity and because of this the Salamanders are bigger and stronger than other marines, albeit a bit slower to react to things. They have difficulty with using aerial equipment owing to the difficulties of training in such an environment. Further, owing to the radiation then they have mutated to have black skin and burning red eyes.
Followers of the Promethean Cult they believe in self dependence, so have trained in the art of manufacture and tend to field higher numbers of custom weapons, armour and as skilled blacksmiths, they have a lot of hammers. The cult values fire and so too do the Salamanders, who favour flamer and melta weaponery.
This mod is not strictly codex, what with them not having one, but is my interpretation of the chapter so I know there are fluff deviations in place.
A bit of background on this mod, if I may indulge you. This mod is my project, started by me on my own and with limited alpha testing to some of my DoW friends and buddies. I had to learn how to do a hell of a lot of new stuff and all the new textures, 2d Art and AE code is mine and the Salamander AI is heavily mine and at one point I was even audio editing! Basically, it started and ends with me. That said, the aforementioned DoW friends have been great with new LP's and unit donations to really make this mod something special.
The Beta was released the day prior to my daughter coming into the world and I am now far too busy to mod properly! For this reason, 1.0.01 is likely the final version, barring any crazy hotfixes.

The "salamanders custom OP" is the custom race banner above the captured "strategic point", "objective point" or "relic". With no "color-leaking issue" with vanilla races or custom mod races.

::A few things on Salamanders::
+Turrets could help.
+Redeemer is not strong enough. By late game, they need the crusader and raider tanks to survive (or be confined to early-mid games, always).
+The fire priest is nice but I find his spells makes him a liability. He needs either to be a tank or to have ranged powers (and enable squad-linking ?).
+Fire Drakes hit for 100dmg vs 135dmg for Assault Termies. Your Drakes could be stronger.
+It would be nice to see the Drakes instant respawn on other units.
+Stormraven is useless with Orbital Relay. It has no attack and takes time to load (not mentionning planes in DoW are akward). Again, they need solid armor vs big daemons, chaos raiders etc.
Ranged attacks are superior to melee in most situations as only 1-2 squads can hit a single target, right ? If you make Salamanders melee-oriented as it seems then you need to give them something to buff up, really, like ranged dmg reductions (e.g. the Tyranids) or massive regen or massive dmg. Dropping Fire Drakes from above is cool tactics but only go so far by late game. Try a game vs Chaos Daemons xD
