I'm so happy that this mod finally has a release! Finally, a Boshin War mod for M&B Warband! I love this time period so much.

EDIT: Review below is based on the unofficial 1.2 patch

-I'm playing with the Satsuma domain for the most part, and I still notice "Trained Imperial Infantry" spawning without any weapons, so they just run at the enemy swinging their fists. Also, some Imperial infantry still sometimes spawn without pants. I looked at the troop trees and they've improved for the most part.

-No more texture errors pop-ups for me, but yari and ceremonial arrows still have white textures.

-I find it weird that some Japanese troops upgrade into Western soldiers. It would be more realistic if the western troops were a separate tree, like mercenaries
---
These are all minor, though, and nothing takes the enjoyment out of this mod. Using Gekokujo as a base means Rising Sun benefits from all the features of that mod. The change in time period and addition of modern firearms makes the gameplay feel exciting, new, and sometimes brutal due to the power of the new guns. Tenno Heika Banzai!

newest version is great, hope it gets updated more

could be better, it's messy, and quite all over the place with it's units and maps

I really like the ideas behind the mod, fun to play, unique and still feels like a mount and blade game. still early alpha so bugs are to be expected, but nothing game breaking that i have found.

The Rising Sun, as it stands, is a very solid mod. Two of the glaring issues, lack of pistols and the bottom half of "modern" uniform pants, was quickly addressed. As of the latest (unofficial) patch available for download the issues with ranged troops spawning with bows rather than firearms seems to be fixed.

With the speediness of the updates and the response to questions, concerns and reports, I'd say this mod has a bright future. I downloaded it 2 hours after it was released, and have had to start 4 new games since then due to updates, a problem I'm happy to have.

I would highly recommend this mod to fans of Japanese history, fans of late 19th century warfare and regular Warband players looking for a little something different.

All that said, I give Rising Sun: Bakamatsu a solid 9/10
