The Empire has fallen and a New Republic is born out of the conflict. But in the ashes of civil war, yet another life stirs...
All Terrain Advanced Raider. For those who don't know... This unit is based on the a concept piece for the ATST that was eventually scrapped. Fans and authors brought it back as an actual, canon, unit because it looks so cool! Basically, this unit is slightly smaller and faster than the ATST. It has heavier armor and it's cannon packs a stronger punch. In essence, it's generally a better walker than the ATST but the ATST is much more versitile and in general, is cheaper to mass produce (which is the typical explanation for seeing many more ATST's than these guys). Hope you like.
FYI... I wanted to get a shot of this from the game engine but I'm at work so this pic is rendered simply using the Photoshop 3D tools.
Damn... Always when I see Rise of the Mandalorians in my updates list, I'm amazed what comes when I click the link. This time I'm very happy to see a design from the glory days, a design which is oriented on the aesthetics of the old trilogy. Thank you the_Farseer for making this great unit, which is sadly not featured in one of the films. I loved this walker since I first saw it and now it's back in all it's glory for Empire at War. For me this walker will be always part of Star Wars, a symbol of the old trilogy aesthetics. Astonishing work!
Edit: What do you think of the (yet unofficial) new stormtrooper helmet (or concept of it)? (http://www.kinofans.com/_obj/31F43669-820A-47FC-995D-115B4EDCCAE0/inline/size/578x/Sturmtruppen-Helm-SW-VII.jpg)
I think its a fantastic design; a very fitting evolution to such an iconic piece of armor.
Yeah, I think it may look aesthetically relied on futuristic designs of the past and it some kind of reminds me of RoboCop, at least some kind of. In terms of evolution I think now you can argue that they may see better through that new visor when you think back of Solo's famous comment about the original stormtrooper helmet. However, I think it's not that easy to create something that symbolic as the original stormtrooper design, it's just not that much extendable designwise and maybe too iconic for further improvement. Nonetheless I think they did well on the clone armor, especially part I. I really liked that design back in the days even if the new trilogy isn't my favorite. The circle closes when you look to this new design, it shares similarities with the clone armor but it also looks "We are the bad guys!". Just think of it in the row beside the other helmets, I think it's pretty cool.
Edit: Sorry, it was Luke's comment, not Han's. Ah, time to see the films again I guess. :)
Indeed. Always a good time to go watch the films again!
Very nice. It does look cool indeed.
Yep. Always was one of my favorite pieces of concept work from Empire Strikes Back. Glad you like it!
You've got some epic timing, there was someone who wanted to commission that exact walker from me because you didn't respond to his pm, after I sent him your way first (as you're better with ground units). And right before I start modelling it BAM, here it is! :D Great texture btw, love the detail on the leg joints.
Lol I JUST responded to his PM asking what unit he needed. Awesome. Well it isn't rigged yet but as with all models I'm making, it will be included in a free-release model pack after ROTM v5 is available for download.
Nice what other units are coming in v5?
The final unit list is posted in the news section ;)
Well, saved me a bunch of animating work, and for that I'm grateful. Will you really release EVERY model you've made in that free release pack? That's amazingly generous of you, will gladly use your amazing TIE fighters ;)
Yep, all ROTM models will be free-release and available in a modder's resource pack to save people the time of having to pull them out of the actual mod files (and then potentially not grabbing an associated texture file or some such other common occurrence).
k thanks :)
good old walker a variant of that is gonna be in star wars rebels anime form disny back to cannon concept :P
Yep. Except they are calling it the All Terrain Defense Pod. Not sure why they changed the name but it's cool that they are using it nevertheless.
The head shape always looked too alien for the Empire in my opinion, reminds me of the tripods from War of the Worlds. And it'd make the perfect transition between the ATXT and ATST -if it isn't already- as it shares aesthetic traits with both. Anyway, while not an ingame shot it sure does look promising!
Thanks! Actually, if you look...in the ATAR you can see pieces of many walker designs. Most notably, the ATPT chassis looks quite similar to the cockpit of the ATAR, although the viewport on the ATAR seems more like the one used on the ATAT. The overall design is of course derivative of the ATST, or the other way around since the ATST design resulted from this originally.
Well, this is definitely high quality. As usual.
What role will this play, outta curiosity?
Descriptions...do people read them...
Well I can understand how one might misconstrue the caption as a description of the unit in SW lore but not how it will function in-game. In this case, its applicable to both so this unit will act somewhere in between the ATST and the 2M Tank. It's has more power vs vehicles than the ATST but isn't totally dedicated to that role... Its faster than the ATST but not as effective against infantry due to the lack of grenade launcher.
Duurr...shoulda been clearer that I meant in-game role. Guess I didn't really read the description well.
Essentially a scout/general purpose walker, then?
Basically. I plan to give it a "sprint-like" ability as well that doubles speed for 5 seconds or something like that. So it's like an ATST on steroids, more or less. The balancing factor will be the fact that it has a single, large cannon and while it's more powerful, it shoots slower and isn't as effective against infantry.
"AT-ST on steroids" - I propose this to be the new official nickname of this walker.
C'mon guys, let's make it a thing.
AT-ST-OS? Although, being that this is Star Wars...the "OS" would be for "on stimpaks."
Lol, now that you said stimpaks, I'm getting some Fallout NV flashbacks.
I remember this model form Starwars Galactic Battlegrounds.
Indeed! Though SW:GB incorrectly assigns it as a predecessor to the ATST, it was still fun to use nevertheless.
This is truly an impressive work of art, the_Farseer. You are to be congratulated, sir!
Thank you! Hopefully it's as fun to use as it is beautiful to look at...
Incredible work, this might be my new favorite land unit. This is one of the few mods where land combat is very enjoyable.
So glad to hear it! Ground combat in the original game was stale and boring... I really wanted to focus on that and breath some life back into land combat. If I'm succeeding, that makes me incredibly happy!
didn't the ATST upgrade from this in galactic battlegrounds?
Yes. However, SW:GB isn't a definitive source on SW chronology... It made a kind of sense in that this walker was created based on concept AT-ST artwork but in actual SW lore it isn't a predecessor, just another variant or type of walker.
Talking about versatility yea.. I don't see any anti personnel weaponry on it so yea looks like a nice big puncher though.
the main difference between your AT-AR and Rebels AT-DP was the laser cannon.

I really cant wait for this mod!
I'm pretty sure the official AT-AR (also known as the "light AT-ST" in Galactic Battlegrounds) had a big cockpit window instead of the little slit you gave it here, but this is still an awesome model! I'll have to make time to play this mod at a later date!
