I thought the Allies had a medium tank in GWWII, and GDI had a medium tank in the first Tiberian War. How come the good guys have a heavy tank now?

Otherwise its very neat.

It is a heavy tank, but apparently called "medium" due to the other much more heavier counterparts, but since the Allies don't have anything heavier yet, it is reasonable to call it heavy.

Also, this doesn't mean that this naming issue has been set in stone yet.

Why is it M1A3?

Even C&C1's Medium tank was an M1A1...per the manual specs, and that was in the mid 90's.

Plus, and you can feel free to argue RL versus fiction, but the A3 does not, and never will exist. All Abrams construction has been discontinued, with new militaries relying on more mobile IFV's.

Not all you say is entirely correct.
According to the manuals I've found (digital ones), the Medium Tank in TD has a 105mm gun. This gun caliber was only used on the M1. The M1A1 (which uses a 120mm gun) was introduced in 1985 (and the M1A2 the year after), while TD takes place in 1995.
In fact the last original M1 was taken out of active service in 1996. In other words, the manual specifications don't fit RL very well.
Another example is the RA medium tank. According to the ini files, the weapon is classified as 90mm... there was never an Abrams tank with a 90mm gun, yet the cutscenes unmistakably show that this is an Abrams tank.
Also look at the artillery. According to the manuals, it has a 155mm cannon, but the RL equivalent (the M110) uses a 203mm cannon.

What I'm trying to say is that the manual can't be trusted as a reliable source of information at this point.

It might be true that the M1A3 does not, and never will exist, but considering the alternative timeline where the first Abrams appears already in the 50's or 60's (in RA), it's not completely unreasonable to think that it could have been upgraded to A3 by 1995.

you should mess around and try to make it more compact version, by 2014 the army expects prototypes then in 2017 they expect to field it,
specifications they are aiming for
-a gun and ammunition that hits targets 12km away
-a engine that does not require the amount of fuel but still retain 70mph(tweaked) and fastest acceleration of any other MBT
-improved electronics to send real time pictures to other tanks as well as a generator giving about 5x more power, they already have a working prototype of that generator
-a possible rubbery type track for less replacements
-working on making the under armor more durable as well as cutting the size and weight of it by 1 and 1/2 its current weight, already have ti cut down that much looking for new ways to cut its weight down
-a guided non-missile 120mm round as well as a round that uses a HE and AP round rolled into 1
-a new composite armor already in development to be lighter but stronger than the choblam(?) with the ability to add the depleted uranium the M1A2 SEP already has.

seeing how this mod is not real life and i was just telling the 1 guy above that said there would never be a M1A3 and that lighter vehicle he was talking about got scrapped in favor of the M1A3.
