The custom installer will allow you to install R6BO in a path of your choice. Registry keys and a much needed graphics wrapper are installed automatically. Soon after installation, you may run the configuration's dialog, the game or have a look at the ReadMe file, with proper links in the Start Menu.
Make sure that you have installed DirectX 9 runtimes (on Windows 10 and Windows 11 they are not provided by default); they are included with the DirectX setup inside the ISO package. User experience may vary depending on the system.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: When the game is run, the screen stays black for a few seconds before crashing to desktop.
A: If you have a modern Nvidia GPU with G-Sync monitor support, try disabling G-Sync in the Nvidia control panel. If you have an AMD GPU instead, try disabling Radeon Enhanced Sync. Make sure to disable ShadowPlay if you use it, it may conflict with the included graphics wrapper. Full screen optimizations and high DPI settings of current Windows OSs may also conflict with the wrapper, so consider tweaking your system settings.
Q: Will this work on Windows 11 x64?
A: The included graphics wrapper (ddcpt.dll) makes the game work great on Windows 11/10/8. Make sure to run the R6BOConfig executable and select your GPU instead of the "Let Black Ops Choose" option. You may also try changing settings of the graphics wrapper by opening and editing the DDrawCompat.ini file in the root folder of Black Ops. More informations on the available settings at the following link: Github.com
Q: Will this work on Windows XP and older?
A: The main R6BO executable has been hex-edited to make use of a graphics wrapper exclusively for modern systems. For legacy Windows OS like XP and older, you may want to start the game by using the R6BOLegacy executable, which does not make use of any graphics wrapper. You can join matches hosted by players on the most recent Windows OS with no issues.
Q: I’m having low FPS and other problems, what should I do?
A: Consider changing settings inside the DDrawCompat.ini file in the root folder of Black Ops. If this fails, consider trying a different graphics wrapper (dgVoodoo or WineD3D) and make sure to rename any different ddraw.dll file to ddcpt.dll, which is what the game executable looks for.
Q: I don’t like the default reticules; I want the original ones from Rogue Spear or some custom ones.
A: Run the R6BORets executable before starting the game, with it you can see all the included reticule mods and enable the one you prefer for proper use in multiplayer.
Q: The AI gets stuck easily in rooms and on ladders, any solution?
A: Sadly not. The AI of these old games is rather primitive and prone to such issues, so live with them. Settings inside the DDrawCompat.ini file limit FPS to 60 and set CPU affinity to just one core. There is no guarantee this has any positive effect on AI behavior.
Do you need Rogue Spear, Urban Ops and Black Thorn to get this to work?
No, it's standalone. It uses its own executable and registry keys. This way you can install the original games and experience them separately with no conflicts between R6BO and them.
I'd like to implement some checks requiring users to own at least one of the Rogue Spear games, as I don't like to be in a grey area to be honest, but they are no longer sold officially from what I see and are freely available in other legitimate gaming sites.
If Rogue Spear ever gets on GOG.com, I will modify the installation process accordingly.
NICE! Right now I'm installing Black Ops so I can get the definitive R6/RS experience.
I got a black screen and CTD on launch when run after installation - fixed by downloading dgVoodoo and copying in the files from there!
Github.com (copy in the contents of the MS/x86 folder)
I very much doubt it. I do not own such controllers, so others might want to try if they work. It also requires many commands, so a keyboard is definitely needed.
The game wouldn't launch at all with the latest update until i ran the game as admin. just an fyi for anyone having trouble.
get the files from dgvoodoo2 put them in the directory i also disabled full screen optimisations and run it in 640x480 then change res ingame
It turns out that if you use dgVoodoo as a graphics wrapper, the Fire Walk map crashes to desktop. I do not provide support for other wrappers, the one included by default is flawless and overall the best one for Rogue Spear games.
I have to run the R6BOLegacy.exe with dgVoodoo in order for the game to run in Windows 10 and 8.1. Otherwise, it crashes to desktop within a couple seconds.
Sounds good. Nothing I can do about this. Graphics wrappers are still much system dependant, there's no ultimate solution. So while DDrawCompat is the best overall, it may not work for every system yet.
Will this run on Windows XP 32bit? Or, has it been modified to only run on newer systems?
I can't tell, XP is definitely a legacy OS, and I doubt most still run it. The point of the modification is that it's meant to work on modern systems.
I checked. It doesn't run on Win XP 32bit. Too bad, I have an old laptop running XP that is dedicated to old R6/Ghost Recon games.
My last comment sounded like a complaint. It was not meant to! What you have done here is amazing and I appreciate all your hard work. Thanks.
where is the MissionAwards.txt file for the awards for complete custom missions?
It's called MissionRewards actually, and it gets saved inside the game folder as usual.
Is it possible to command squadmates to move forward or open doors in Rogue Spear WITHOUT using the Planning system, or is that a feature that only Raven Shield has?
I've played the original R6 on GOG and there's zero ways to order your squadmates to clear a room or move forward without using the planning system, which kinda sucks.
Raven Shield is perfectly playable without planning system because you can give "quick commands" by pressing Spacebar to make your teammates move up, open doors, etc. How playable is Rogue Spear without using the inflexible planning system that doesn't let you readjust your plan on the fly?
Sure, press U key to give orders.
Hey there. Thank you so very much for this mod. You've done us retrogamers a huge favour.
I played the older 2014 version without problems, but here on Win 7 64 Nvidia
the videos and the menu lag so bad I am unable to play.
Any possible workaround?
I can only suggest that you try different graphics wrappers, dgVoodoo or WineD3D. The one included by default is the best one though, as some maps tend to crash to desktop with dgVoodoo for some reason.
Also read the included ReadMe file. Some third-party features, like Shadowplay and G-Sync, are known to cause major issues and should be disabled.
As a former marine in rehab your mod is a dream come true to me thank you, OG R6 is my fav game of all time ... THE GAME RUNS GREAT on win 11 using (dgVoodoo) the only problem i encounter is a weird glitch in the txt/font (vertical lines in Between every word) is there SOLUTION for this ? thanks
my pc = win 11 / gtx 1080ti / 32gb ram
Hi! I'm glad to hear that the mod works on Win11. I wish you the best!
Sadly, I cannot afford to update to Win11 anytime soon, I'm still running much older hardware, so I cannot reproduce the font glitch you've described. All I can suggest is that you try any of the other tweaks mentioned in the ReadMe, maybe one of them may help solve the issue with any of luck.
Awesome work. Love seeing this series get some love for modern systems. I've encountered an issue. I was doing other stuff for a bit and now I can't save a plan. Can go through the save process, but when wanting to load, there's nothing there. I've reinstalled the game, changed the install location (both outside of program files), but the issue persists. Not using any mods/wrappers.
Sadly that's an issue with stock Black Thorn as well. Without a source code, it's unlikely it can be fixed at this time. Plans are actually saved, but they are not displayed by the menu prompt.
This is even an issue with the included default plans; the game does load default plans correctly, but in the Save/Load dialog they are not displayed most of the time.
Ah. Thanks for letting me know that it is actually saving. Found out if I save the plan, it goes into "mods/Rainbow Six/plan". Moving the pln file to "data/plan" causes it to pop up in-game. Bit annoying, but at perfectly workable.
Oh thanks! I never noticed that! Maybe I can find a way to fix it. I'll keep it in mind.
This problem I have solved deleting the "plan" folder from "mods/Rainbow Six" for Take Down missions and for main game missions you can solve it deleting "plan" from "mods/take down" folder.
I Love your work,
thank you for bringing these old Games onto Modern Pc‘s.
I got a couple of Questions though :
I don‘t have the Intro any idea how to activate it?
If i want to start the Campaigns normaly one after another without the whole Mission List,
i have to make a New Profil Right?
What does the Difficulty does exactly?
This is my first Time to play the classic Games and i think about starting in Recruit...
Thank you again for your Work,
you managed to wipe out compatibility Problems that are near impossible to solve for me on the GoG Release.
You should be able to activate the intro in the options given by the R6BOConfig executable.
For campaigns, just click New Campaign, you'll be asked to specify the name of the new save file.
Difficulty affects enemy AI, but on Recruit you also have auto-aiming enabled, which makes things much easier.
Just FYI, the GOG release you mention is not related to this; GOG released the 1998 Rainbow Six title. Black Ops is based on Rogue Spear, the 1999 sequel which is not digitally available, sadly.
Thank you for your kind and fast reply :-)
In the config. the intros are activated,
could it be that it doesn‘t work because of the 1920 x 1080 Resolution of mine?
I know that the Addons for part 1 are not included in the Gog release,
you only can buy the Addon Roms legaly which is a shame.
Thats how i find you,
through internet research....and your release is far less risky than the typical alternatives to get this addon files.
My Father played the first Rainbow 6 when i was a child,
i tried it too but i was far too young,
to think that tactical
(sometimes i think i still am with over 30 years but well.... XD)
i could barely speak and read English and i never got the hang of the planning Phase at this Time not to mention the difficulty.
Half Life 1 and Duke Nukem 3D
(the first Level at least XD)
were far more interesting that time for me ;-)
I tried it again after more than over a Decade later on GoG and damn....
this Mouse Bug among many others made it impossible to Play this Game .
(and i managed to make Sherlock Holmes Mystery of the Mummy from steam playable so I'm no complete stranger to modify old Games.)
Thanks for bringing this old gaming treasure back in a far more better way than most professionel Studios today
(Yes I‘m looking at you GTA definitive Edition !?!)
Another stupid Question at last i hope you forgive me ;-)...
The first training Missions where you are on the shooting Range to try out your Weapons....
is there a way to "pass" this Mission without using ESC,
abort Mission or jumping to Main Menu?
Thanks to you for the kind words!
No idea why the intro wouldn't work. Maybe you have a codec pack installed for other video formats which causes issues? I don't know really. In any case it's not important, it's the original low-res intro of 1998 Rainbow Six (the same of GOG).
As for the first training missions, no way to pass them since there are no objectives. You must press ESC, that's how the developers made them work.
Btw i managed to get the Intros to work.
So for the people who care about stuff like this,
here is what i found out :
1. Go to Options
2. Go to Mods and activate the UI for the R6 Game Campaign you want to start.
3. Close the Game and Start it again and you have the fitting UI + Intro for the Campaign you want to Play.
The only thing‘s missing now are the missing Outros who concluded the Story of the Campaign
maybe there is a way around that too :-)
P.S.
This seems to work for every UI in Mods
except UI 1
(Rainbow Six 1 original Campaign) when i activate UI 1 in Mods i still can't get the Intro.
Don't bother about outros, it's not possible to have them at specific points of the 56-missions campaign. Only one outro video can be specified (it's hardcoded in the executable), and the last mission of the campaign, the last of the original Black Thorn, had no outro video. Original videos from all expansions are provided so anyone can see them with Media Player at least.
i have a issue with Mods
On PC it's all fine. I can select your Mods in the Option Settings.
but on my Laptop. The same Game doesn't regonize the Mods folder and i can not enable mods like normal because it shows "config", "data", "mods" and "music" as Mods but that is not correct.
On PC it's normal and it shows "UI #1 Rainbow Six"...
what is the problem on my laptop? Both are Windows 10. Folders are the same and the game is the same.
No idea. I got that report from someone else as well. I can only suggest that you do a clean installation on a folder that is not inside Window's Program Files nor inside the Desktop directories.
i will try but it's not a big problem
Thank you for this awesome mod!
the game runs well but sometimes I have some microstuttering on the mouse. I'm on a windows 10 computer with a 4790k cpu and a gtx 1070 ti. I've locked the framerate to 30 from nvidia control panel, I forced the use of the gpu in R6BOConfig.exe The game use to run fine ( If I alt-tab i get a black screen but I guess it's normal so I never do it during missions). I just would like to fix this issue with the mouse cause sometimes it just goes crazy. Can it be dpi related? My mouse has 1600 dpi and I'm playing on the lowest possible sensitivity. Thank you in advance, good work :)
No idea, really. Rogue Spear engine games were not expected to run on contemporary hardware, so it may be well due to that. It's the first time I hear about this issue, I wish I had a solution to suggest.
did you resolve this issue? I am having the same mouse out of control stutter issues as you are describing above. I have tried multiple wrappers, different resolutions, changing mouse sensitivity in game and through microsoft control. none of it helps the situation. I have noticed it gets a bit better when the in-game sensitivity is set to 0 (nothing), but it is still pretty sloppy, especially along the y-axis.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
Also, I am using windows 11 with a GTX4080
Just tried out the new release, I could finally complete Winter Hawk legit, thank you for your work!
Thanks a lot for this excellent compilation, been a dream come true to play this on Win 10 without any issues :D
I have two questions though:
1) How on earth does one activate the mods as mine are grayed out and can't seem to enable them?
2) From the multiplayer side of things, is it possible to add a string or entry from Rogue Spear: Urban Ops to the Black Ops 2.0 exe file that references the following Gamespy entry: master.gamespy.com..\queryid\%d.%d..\echo\%s
In the Urban Ops exe file, the section begins at offset 00462DE0 and ends at 00462E10. Its the only reference to gamespy in the entire urbanops.exe file.
This is most likely a strange request, however, the original rogue spear and rogue spear urban ops is playable via Openspy.net (http://beta.openspy.net/), see list of supported titles over here: Beta.openspy.net
I know one can use direct IP connect or programs such as Hamachi, RadminVPN etc to also play online, but having Openspy support in addition for Black Ops 2.0 would also be welcome addition to the mod for those of us that use and play games via Openspy!
If its not possible to rework the mod to add support for Openspy due to all the modifications that you made, I'll understand, but if you can, it will be awesome!
Thanks for reading.
Regards
Ston3Cold
PS: I tried manually adding it to the Black Ops 2.0 exe with HxD, but it obviously changes the byte size of the exe, which renders the exe void to launch the game.
Truly no idea why the Mods option is greyed out on your end, this is the first time I hear of it not working. The exe of Black Ops 2.0 fully enables the Mods option which is greyed out in the original Black Thorn executable.
As for Openspy, maybe something could be done, but it's not a priority now. I'm currently working on a huge update and possibly definitive release, so I'll keep that in mind. In other news, Voobly is going to provide a lobby soon for Black Ops.
Join the Discord server linked in the Homepage section of this mod's Profile, you'll find an active community there.
Thanks for the reply.
Since I've posted, I re-installed the game once more and the mods menu is now working as it should, not sure what went wrong first time round.
Even if Openspy support isn't a priority right now, glad to hear that something can be done in the future to support it :)
Will check out the Discord as I'm keen to try out the MP of the game.
Good luck on the huge update and definitive release, looking forward to it :)
We made a Black Ops 2.0 forum at Allr6.com
Keep up the great work Menrva. Long live classic R6!
Thank you for this creation! Can't wait to get started.
I did the install outside of the x86 folder and brought in dgVoodoo. When I start the game I get a black rectangle and a spinning cursor.
Win 10 with Nvidia Geforce GT 1030.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Update - I clicked on R6BOLegacy.exe and it works fine now.Except for the blurry text. Thanks for unlocking all of the maps!
Hello people.
I have been playing this amazing R6 conversion for a while. I have completed original campaign and almost Eagle Watch campaign. Now I'm facing a problem. When I try to resume my campaign (operation Eagle watch) it crashes to desktop in the "initializing screen". I have flawlessly loaded that mission several times but now that happened in a sudden and I can not resume my campaign any more. Any solution? If I want to reinstall the game, which files should I keep to save my campaign progression?
UPDATE: I have "fixed it". As it continued failing I branched that campaign. Doing so I have not lost my progression. If you do not want to repeat the previous mission just active debug keys (type "debugkeys" on console) and press F10 and then F12 for Level skip. After that I could continue my campaign with Operation Eagle Watch without CTD.
I've just noticed that the date for operation Iron Comet (040) is wrong. The mission takes place on April 2nd, 2003. It should be on February 2nd, 2003, instead. Other than that, outstanding conversion so far!
Thanks for reporting! It turns out some other UO and CO missions still had wrong dates. That's all coming from Black Ops 2014 by mistake. For some reason one of the modders of the 2014 version wanted to merge the Take Down campaign with Rainbow Six's lore. Mission dates were modified for that purpose. I'll fix them for good for a future rerelease.
Thank you. <3
I've been trying to play these old Rainbow Six games for years without success. Gave up on it after some time. Rainbow Six 3 was great but the quality of the missions in the originals is unmatched. Not even mentioning that terrorists are less likely to lemming to you here than in RS3.
I gave BlackOps a try a few years ago but I ran into issues that prevented me from really enjoying it.
I don't know what you did exactly to those recent updates but now it seems to work flawlessly and I cannot ever be grateful enough.
Thank You.
