With Operations 1942, we develop a Half-Life Singleplayer mod which is the first to have a high standard of realism and quality. All missions, the player will have to face while playing the game, will be based on historical events which will give the game additional atmosphere. The realistic damage system and the film-quality background music will add to the special Feeling of Operations 1942.

Storyline:

The year is 1942. The war, only present in Europe and North-Africa becomes a world war as Japan joins. The American forces decide to intervene in the European war, which will become bigger than ever in 1944 with the invasion of France. You are part of a secret commando unit, which was trained for seeking and spying behind enemy lines. In your missions in North Africa, France and Germany you will be on your own and have to act alike. Your mission is, to fulfil your objectives without being detected, which is for your own safety. Many situations can be solved better by cheating, sneaking and sometimes with a well aimed shot as opposed to an offensive assault.

Features:

- External mission system

External mappers have the possibility to create their own small missions and add them into the game just by copy and paste.

- Background music that suits the levels
- Many in-game sequences
- Realistic damage system
- "Spirit of Half-Life" support
- Completely new 2d graphics

I get to the title screen, but when I try to start it nothing happens. I get no errors, just the game does not begin no matter what difficulty level I set.

Potentially good mod ruined by the curse of, "Hey, let's make a mod that is impossibly difficult and therefore has no fun-factor whatsoever." It takes no talent to make something impossible to play. Should have known better.. when you see the word "realism" used in reference to gaming, remember it is code for "Get ready to be frustrated by something that cannot be beaten without cheats". "Realism" has no place in fantasy environments such as video games. If you want "realism", stop playing video games and join the reality of life.
The only redeeming value of this mod is the nice models and textures.

1. World War 2 isn't exactly a "fantasy" environment and to refer to it as such is insulting

2. It's not 'impossibly' difficult. It's just a lot harder than the baby-food, FPS crap that passes as a 'tactical shooter' these days. (Looking at Battlefield and Call of Duty here...)

Beyond the fact that his comment was several years old, he is not saying WW2 was fantasy. He is saying that video-games are a fantasy, they are fake, video-games are entertainment, that they should focus on fun and not reality.

I agree and disagree:
Agree: Yes video games are meant for entertainment.
Disagree: Did you ever hear about "simulators"?

It wasn't that realistic, the enemies and weapons were just reskins of the ones from half life.
