No, that was because the curve made it quite practical to prepare the ground for setting up a camp. Actually the feedback about using this bayonet in combat was quite negative as it was influencing too much the rifle's balance, like while shooting you would have to expect to have your bullet deviate 1 meter more at 500 meters range.
The Chassepot bayonet is in fact based on Turkish weaponry, more specifically the yatagan short sabre. The French (and later the British) both developed bayonets based on these Turkish models, and for this reason they're often referred to as 'yatagan bayonets'.
yes, the bayonets of not only french, but british as well were curved because after mounting the bayonet at the bottom of the barrel instead of the side made the bayonet dangereous to use the ramrod while reloading as you could jab the bayonet in the hand. the slight curve made it so you can reload the musket and not be stabbed.
What a curious curve! Is there a historical reason for it being like that?
Maybe the French borrowed from Turkey's Atcan Scimitar, they think the curve bayonet can be sharper when fighting against the enemy.

I see, thanks

Yeah, that is why I said in the comment above, but still thanks for the additional information.
