Inhuman's been delayed a few too many times, but it's releasing. I swear!

Greetings! I'm Bradley Toliver, team lead for Anticitizens. After years of hard work there's a real end in sight for the project. In this article I'd like to go over what to expect in this initial release, and what's coming after. But first, check out this swanky trailer!

Let's answer some questions here, both for new subscribers and long term followers:

What is Inhuman?

Inhuman is a intense Half-Life 2 mod with full reworks to the game's combat loop set in a future without Gordon Freeman or Alyx Vance. Enemy behavior has been totally rewritten to give a much more engaging and challenging experience along with rebalanced weapons that reward smart decision making. New soldier variants ported and edited from Half-Life Alyx have also been added to help round out the enemy roster. The goal of this mod is to give a more survival focused experience similar to what Half-Life 1 provided.

Is this coming to Steam?

Currently the answer to this is no, however it will probably change in the future. For our first release we are putting out the first two thirds of the game, after which we're definitely going to need a break to decompress. Afterwards, we'll be figuring out what our endgame looks like and as we ramp up to ship that, we'll be pushing to get the game on Steam for sure.

Will this be open source?

Yes! While the code wont be available on day 1, it's my full intention to have it ship with the game's final content drop. Inhuman's AI code makes pretty significant changes to enemy behavior, however at the moment these changes mostly only apply to enemies actually featuring in the game. I want modders to be able to make whatever they want with Half-Life 2's existing NPC repertoire, so I'll do my best to standardize the rest of the cast when I can.

When is the game releasing?

Inhuman's first two chapters should be playable in about 2-3 months. At its current state, we have enough content to ship a decent experience, but we're trying to close out the 2nd chapter on a high note before we go on break. In an absolute worst case scenario where we can't get this extra content done in time, we'll still be shipping in Q2 of this year.

Trailer is cool! I'm also happy about it going open-source in the future. But releasing 2/3 of the mod feels really weird. I saw devs releasing first 1/3 or 1/4 of the campaign as kind of a demo. And then the rest of the game. Seeing the opposite i.e. playing the whole game and then waiting for the final might be underwhelming.

On the other hand, there're episodic and early access releases that have the similar situation near the end of their life cycle. So, it's not that bad i guess

I'm really excited for this mod, I just saw the trailer and I just want you to know that you all are doing an excellent job. This could easily be the mod of the year when it comes out. No mod had me so impatient for its launch as this one, everything looks great!

By the way, will there be more weapons? I say this because so far only the pistol, smg, shotgun and grenades have been seen. Also, I understand that the normal soldiers from half life 2 will also appear here with a new design, right? And what about the xen aliens?

It also seems that there was a temporary change? since in the trailer it said that 7 years had passed, and I understand that this is only 1 year after the borealis incident

Absolutely killer, to think back in 2008 when the community was putting out simple map-packs and model-reskins, it would have been hard to imagine back then we'd eventually be surpassing the Initial Episodes in terms of quality and gameplay revisions!

Im glad to see that with each new media the project is getting better and better.
If we compare old screenshots and the current status of art - we see a huge progress.

By the way, when the mod releases on Steam will it have achievements ?

Shame, that for now it contains no all chapters. Dont like to play mod piece by piece. But still, a really good work! Not all mods can boast of a new and or remade enemy AI. Thanks for that, man!

Amazing ! In my opinion it's a good idea to put a first version, rest and keep going after this. Sometimes a project can be very exhausting, and it's important to think a step-by-step process to not get too tired, and finally giving up.

Can't wait to play this one in a few months !
