Yeah... just another laser beam. If it's microwaves, isn't it invisible?
That's right, human eye can't see microwave, but if it's invisible in the game, it'll be very spooky I think :D
No, keep them visible. It'll be annoying, not spooky.
...unless you can somehow disable the ships and not have them reenable until someone captures them with a marine frigate.
It's also possible he meant it as a pun or something, like "microwave cannon" instead of "microwave oven". But incorporating this new idea wouldn't be so bad either.
