I may tone down the explosion but the overall effect will remain the same. The "life-like" quality they get from hitting the planet is due to the presence of an atmosphere (or air for that matter) so in space a nuke is just a normal explosion.
Actually, nuclear explosion tests conducted our of atmosphere show a much larger hypercenter, shocking as it may be, being in atmosphere causes the exlosion to be much smaller, since the atmosphere causes alot of friction and ineffecient energy transfer because in atmosphere, the kinetic energy is exerted outwards by the atmosphere, so it is constantly losing energy to the enviroment. In space this is much less, there is more radiation, more heat, larger blast wave, brighter hypercenter, remember, a nuclear bomb is so different to a normal explosive its almost like comparing a sword to a gun.
Don't think of it like a shockwave it is spherical though it is not a blast wave of any sort. Due to space being a vacuum and a "wave" needs a medium to travel through i.e. an atmoshpere it simply can't happen. However when the nuke goes off it literally realeases a massive pulse of radiation, mostly x-ray radiation, but without air or water or some other material to get in the way the rest of the radiation released creates what is referred to as the blast wave. There is so much of it released that it can be damaging at close range, but it does dissipate very quickly. Alright then nuclear physics rant complete.
why not build a planetkiller XD...if you remember the 3d book...the new mk.I nuklear bomb by oni...which was activated ok reach after the covernant glassed 99% of the planet
but still a nuclear explosion in space is going to be big so i say leave the size. that and arent we going to try to use that one guys mod that made bigger planets and gravity wells?
When the gamma radiation emitted from a nuclear bomb in space reacts with the upper atmosphere, the resulting reaction forms a massive EMP blast that can knock out circuits from over 150 miles away. But this is only on the surface of a planet.
Yes and that is because when a nuke goes off it releases insane amounts of radiation and emp meaning electromagnetic pulse is involved with electromagenetic radiation, and there is some released when a warhead goes off.
its needs to be tuned down in size. if you bomb a planet the nukes are life like and there only like 1/5 of this size.

Wouldn't the explosion be smaller in space? Because you get the overall explosion from the "fire" of it and you need oxygen for fire to burn
probably. I'll possibly reduce the explosion size later

Well there you go. Straight out of Jebus's mouth :D
Where would the blast wave come from if there is no atmosphere?
it isn't a wave is a sphere, and i know what u mean it is more of an expanding sphere of boom rather than an earthlike exapanding wave of doom

but these are like 50 megatons yield so only half it

I'm not critising, but arent the Shiva Nuclear Missiles supposed to have an EMP effect or something along those lines

im not sure but i remember in the fall of reach the shiva keyes used during the "keyes loop" had a light emp effect

It's not too large, the SHiva has a reather large radius.
Nice, as we're talking nukes I assume your using the NOVA as the UNSC superweapon?
The SMAC's should be crazy awesome UNSC super weapons used only to defend the planet they are on
It should be a special ability for one or two capital ships.
NOVAs should be a weapon like the Novalith, theyre just way to damn powerful for ship use
ho...ly...CRAAAAP!! *grunt and Shipmaster* RUN THE **** AWAY!!!! :O!
