I've mixed designs here to create something that hopefully looks unique and cool. To create a Ranger Elite variant that would fit into the "First Strike" timeframe, I've combined the Halo 2 Ranger combat harness with the Halo: Reach Ranger helmet. I hope the design looks good.

No, units cannot melee. The only unit that can melee AND shoot is the Hunter but that's because melee is the Hunter's primary attack. I've tried to work this out with other units and the system is just clumsy. You always end up just having to choose...melee unit or shooter.
is there any way to look at age of empires 3 stuff and "incorporate" some of those files to switch between melee and ranged shooting? just an idea i'm kind of a noob at modding so I don't what mixing and matching would do.
No, there is no way. Age of Empires may use XML script (don't know if it actually does or not...) but the game engines are different and the engine for this game just isn't set up for this type of AI behavior.

Why not try setting it as a range thing as where you have a set distance for each unit so it does a transition from the shooting file to the melee file. Thus the closer your unit is the more likely it will move into the set ranges. Or why not make the melee an ability where it switches like the T4-B. Anyways this looks good. Keep up the great work. :)
That change weapon ability only changes the projectile type...it does not change the atk animation.
You know farseer. Melee is easily possible in this game.
Theres two ways to go about it.
take a look at the rancor attack abilities xml. You can add in min/max ranges for these abilities to occur too. I was going to make a mod where all hero units had special animations. Only thing is that this requires the attachbone and pretty precise ranges. It works out well for ranged attacks like lightning and saberthrows, but not close range attacks unless its an execution kind of event.
For making more cinematic swordfights that arent clumsy like you had problems with, just use hero clashes, and make the amount of damage inflected per exchange absurdly high, and just coreograph and animate a long fight ;)
i gave up on that mod though because i stopped caring about eaw and i couldnt animate worth a damn lol. (Almost finished the sith stalker though ;) )
There's obviously melee for the Jedi in the vanilla game. Could just have Elites use the light saber scripting for their swords. Just need to tone it down a little.

Heretics will be a hostile indigenous faction on some worlds, like the Flood or the Sentinels or the human Rebels (all included). Others that are non-hostile will be Honor Guards, human Police/SWAT troopers, UNSC Army troopers(maybe...), and armed civilians.
Of course, none of these units will actually be seen in the beta since they are intended for Galactic Conquest.
but cant u put them in spawning buildings for skirmish to mix things up a little? i mean pirates were on some spirmish maps in eaw so if u can it will be nice to use honor guards on some maps and like the unsc get like swat on the same map for renforcements
